Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEFCs) are power generation devices to generate electricity directly from chemical energy of fuels via electrochemical reaction. One of key materials to determine PEFCs performances is a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) which transports proton selectively from anode to cathode and blocks fuel gases at the same time. PEM materials need thermochemical durability, excellent mechanical strength, high proton conductivity, and high fuel barrier properties. The representative PEM materials are perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers such as Nafion® with excellent chemical durability and high proton conductivity. However, PFSA ionomers have high production cost and severe loss in proton conductivity in the dry state. Meanwhile, sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) ionomers have been perceived as alternatives to PFSA ionomers owing to their cheap production cost, high tunability of proton, and gas transport behavior. In spite of their advantages, SPAES membranes have been suffering from delamination of catalyst layers from them during harsh PEFCs operation. In this study, reinforced membranes were fabricated by impregnating SPAES ionomers into porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) support film with excellent chemical durability. In order to induce spontaneous impregnation to porous PTFE support film, we developed SPAES ionomers nano-dispersed in a water-alcohol mixture. In addition, glass transition temperature control was used to solve mechanical brittleness derived from low boiling point of the solvent mixture. The resulting reinforced membranes showed excellent dimensional stability, high proton conductivity, excellent mechanical resistance to repeated hydrogen gas stimulus, and improved single cell performances.
