The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group counseling programs for children from multicultural families. For the purpose of the study, master`s theses, doctoral dissertations, and journal articles published in Korea from 2009 to 2014 were systematically reviewed. As a result, a total of 59 studies were eligible for the inclusion criteria, and the quantitative results were calculated using meta-analysis.
The final analysis was to identify the characteristics of the intruder's target, depending on the coding standard, coding by applying the formula to the effect size of the intruder from each effect size was calculated 69. In addition, each group was analyzed using the R project for statistical computing 3.3.3 version program to obtain the effect size and test homogeneity of variance.
The results are as follows. First, 69 effect sizes were produced using random-effects model. The average effect size of the programs was 1.335, which indicates a large effect size.
Second, there was no significant statistical difference between the average effect size of the programs utilizing supplementary tools and the those not utilizing them.
Third, among the groups divided by level of school, the preschooler group was the most effective (2.718). Among the groups divided by residential neighborhoods, metropolitan city was the highest (2.793). In the effect size according to the number of group members, below 5 was the highest (2.311). Regarding the effect size according to operating time per session, the program less than 60 minutes is the highest (1.725). As the ratio of ego identity session per total sessions increases, effect size slightly decreases. However, the differences according to the investigation of request, preparatory program, the total number of sessions, the number of sessions per week, participation of assistant host and group sex ratio were not statistically significant.
Fourth, the effect size differences according to dependent variables were not found to be statistically significant.
Based on these outcomes, the findings of this study can be used for planning group programs for children from multicultural families and contribute to developing and implementing the interventions.
