With a solo-dining propensity triggered by a growing “doing-things alone culture” becoming a hot trend nowadays, this study is aimed at psychological factors influencing the level of contentment and propensity toward solo-dining while focusing on how self-determined motivation for solitude impacts on the tendency toward solo-dining and its contentment. In addition, consumers were classified according to the type of self-determined motivation for solitude and the dining patterns before finding out the preferences for restaurants and the differences of dining behaviors for each group. The population of the study covered adults living in the region of Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province who have experienced solo dining and the people in online communities dedicated to solo dining. The survey was conducted from 27 April, 2017 to 8, May, 2017. The survey was carried out via self-administered questionnaire survey method along with online survey, and convenience sampling was used for the analysis. 202 valid data collected (80.8%) were used for empirical analysis with the help of the SPSS v23.0 statistics package program. The test results of the hypothesis was the following. First, the analysis on the relations between the self-determined motivation for solitude and the tendency toward solo dining shows the self-determined motivation for solitude has a significant impact on the freedom and enjoyment of solo dining. However, it does not influence social restraint, simplicity, and economic value. Second, the analysis on the relationship between dining patterns and contentment proved the freedom and enjoyment of solo dining have a positive impact on the level of contentment, and social restraint negatively impacts. However, simplicity and economic value did not affect the level of contentment of solo dining. Third, the analysis on the relationship between self-determined motivation for solitude and the level of contentment of solo dining indicated that the reflective motivation for solitude and active motivation for solitude were significantly influencing the contentment of solo dining. On the other hand, internal growth motivation for solitude did not have a significant impact. Next, the analysis on the solo-dining consumers according to self-determined motivation for solitude and dining patterns led to three categories: low, middle, and high groups. It can be inferred that in the low group most people have a lower score of solo dining tendency meaning that they are indifferent or passive about solo dining. The middle group showed high scores in terms of social restraint, simplicity, and economic value. It can be inferred that those in this group are likely to prefer to have meals quickly as they are self-conscious. Furthermore their decision-making process is flexible depending on price. The high group has a higher level of freedom of solo dining and enjoyment, but shows low social restraint. Those in this group are likely to enjoy solo dining without being self-conscious. Each group shows different preferences for restaurants. Simple and universal restaurants received strong preference in the middle group. On the other hand, the high group shows higher preference for concept-based restaurants. When it comes to stay, the high group showing a higher level of freedom and enjoyment records the longest. The rate of smartphone use is the highest in the middle group, which has a tendency to be self-conscious. The level of contentment is the highest among the high group. Overall, in order for solo-dining consumers to maximize the contentment of solo dining, it is likely to reach the conclusion that they can achieve higher level of contentment when seeking freedom and enjoyment driven by self-determined motivation for solitude. The research is designed to help develop marketing strategies regarding behaviors of solo-dining consumers for related businesses. Additionally, it is also able to serve as useful materials on social phenomena and trends concerning “doing-things-alone culture.”
