Almost all thermal systems use heat exchangers. Compact-size organic Rankine cycle (ORC) power generators call for small-scale heat exchangers to work with them. Evaporators contribute to a big portion of the capital cost, and their price is directly related to their size or transfer area. Highly porous open-cell metal foams are being considered to improve performance while keeping the size of heat exchangers small. Since the heat transfer area plays a direct role in the performance of heat exchangers, micro-cellular structures such as metal foams are proposed to increase the heat duty of heat exchangers by increasing the surface area while maintaining their small size. The enhancement ratio of experimental Nusselt numbers over predicted values is 2 to 4 for an integral finned tube, 1.5 to 6 for a twisted tape insert, 1.5 to 4 for a corrugated tube, and 1.5 to 4 for a dimpled tube. On the other hand, compared to a normal unenhanced tube, the experimental friction factor increases by 1 to 4 for tubes with integral fins, 2 to 13 for inserted twisted tape, 2 to 6 for corrugated tubes, and 3 to 5 for a dimpled tube. Plate heat exchangers are mainly appealing because of their compactness. An increase of up to 300% in the heat transfer coefficient using 40-PPI aluminum metal foam with porosity of 0.93 and air as the fluid compared to an empty channel is reported. The primary objective is to understand the phase change phenomena in refrigerants, and improve the heat transfer coefficient of conventional heat exchangers. The secondary objective is to apply those results in organic Rankine cycle systems and contribute to compact ORC units. Since the primary objective of this study is to enhance the heat transfer coefficient of two-phase flows, in following chapters, thermal enhancement using open-cell porous media, metal foams, is investigated. Both shell and tube configuration and plate heat exchangers are studied. In this section, pure fluids and zeotropic mixtures are considered. The results of these two preliminary researches are used to design a novel plate heat exchangers that utilizes metal foam to enhance the heat transfer from the hot side to the cols side. In the last chapter, this novel evaporator is used in an ORC system. In almost all chapters, experimental data are compared to existing predictive correlations and in case of necessity, new correlation are proposed.
