Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) have been widely used as rechargeable power sources for long-lasting electronic devices, electrical vehicles(EVs), and stationary energy storage systems owing to their high gravimetric capacity and power density. Graphitic carbon is commonly used as the anode material in LIBs; however, its use presents difficulties in achieving high performance owing to its low theoretical capacity (~372 mAh g-1) and low tap density (< 1 g cm-3), and there are safety issues related to lithium plating. In this regard, Li alloying metals including antimony(Sb) and tin(Sn) have attracted significant attention as alternative anode materials for graphitic carbon. Since an atom of Li alloying metal can form an alloy with one or more lithium atoms, they can demonstrate high theoretical capacities (e.g., Li4.4Sn: 990 mAh g−1, and Li3Sb: 660 mAh g−1). Furthermore, the higher reaction potential between Li+ ions and these materials mitigates the lithium plating phenomenon. However, these kinds of anode materials undergo large volume changes during cycling, resulting in the crumbing and cracking of their electrodes, and ultimately capacity decay. In this work, we investigated the effect of metal alloy and binder to overcome problems related to volume change during the battery operation process. The alloy based anode materials for LIBs were synthesized by high energy mechanical milling(HEBM) process or heat treatment, followed by HEBM process. The structural and morphological characteristics of these composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, indicating that the active particles (SnTe or Sb) were dispersed in hybrid matrix (TiC/C or AlC0.75/C). Based on this effective structure of composites, the overall the overall electrochemical performances were evaluated. Furthermore, in order to optimize effective binders, the electrochemical performances of three kinds of binders were compared and discussed in this paper.
