As powered wheelchair users increases, there are many safety accidents. The causes of accidents are due to crashing with obstacles, malfunctions of joystick, battery discharge, air-pressure of wheelchair tire, and unbalanced wheelchair. Safety accidents are occurring not only in the outdoor, but in the public indoor places as well. In order to reduce the number of accidents, an indoor self-driving wheelchair system and a smartphone safety management application for powered wheelchair users have been developed. An indoor self-driving wheelchair system was designed using hall sensors which are located under the wheelchair battery, so that it can move according to magnetic lines placed on the floor. In order to prevent collisions, ultrasonic sensors were installed in the front of the wheelchair to detect obstacles. In addition, a smartphone safety management application for powered wheelchair was developed to provide information such as, detection of obstacles, battery remains, unbalanced wheelchair, and tire pressure to the users. After the development of the wheelchair system and the application, the performance of self-driving wheelchair, detecting obstacles and sensing distance, and feedback of application were verified by the experiments, In the case of self-driving wheelchair system, although there were some off the course, it arrived at the exact destination relatively well. Because it can re-drive, there were no problem of arriving at the destination. The self-driving wheelchair system was able to prevent from collision with obstacles and was able to stop correctly within the error range of selected distance. Also, the users were able to sense the obstacles by getting feedbacks from the safety management application. The powered wheelchair users were able to obtain information on battery remaining, wheelchair balance, and air pressure of tires in real time. The results of this study showed that the development of an indoor self-driving wheelchair system and a smartphone safety management application for powered wheelchair users were effective in preventing safety accidents.
