The purpose of this study is to examine how the marital conflicts of the married couples affect their children’s aggression. The research problems of the study are as follows:
First, how are marital conflicts of the married couples related to aggression of their adolescent children? Second, what marital conflict factors do affect the children's aggression? Third, what differences do the married couples’ backgrounds variables bring to their marital conflicts?
The questionnaires were distributed to 230 couples and their children who were in middle and high schools located in Gunsan and Daejeon, and 527 copies were returned. With deletion of incomplete returns, 147 copies from the husbands, 180 copies from the wives and 180 copies from children were used for the final analysis. Two measures were used plus a survey on the subjects social demographic factors: A marital conflicts questionnaire to assess conflicts on economic matters, sexual dissatisfaction, house labor sharing issues, personality mismatch, aggressive behaviors, lack of communication, parents’ home related issues, and parenting problems, and an aggression scale to measure the students’ physical, verbal and emotional aggression, negative attitude and behaviors and hypersensitiveness.
The results of the research are as follows:
The husband's conflict factors affecting the aggression of his child are dissatisfaction with sex life and lack of communication. When the husbands are dissatisfied with their wives in sex life and every day communication aggression of their children tends to increases. Meanwhile, when the wives had conflicts due to domestic matters, child rearing problems, or communication difficulties, their children's aggression gets higher.
Second, among the factors of marital conflict, the physical aggression of the child is affected by the husband dissatisfaction with sexual life and their wives’ aggressive behaviors violence were the significant predictors on their children’s physical aggression, while sexual life and communication conflict variables were significant predictors on their children’s verbal aggression. By contrast, the physical aggression of the child was the highest when the wives felt more conflicts on household problems and child rearing issues, and the wives’ conflicts on miscommunications led to verbal aggression of their children.
Third, there were significant differences of marital conflicts by the couples’ background variable. For the husbands’ conflicts, age, educational level, monthly income, the number of children, and sharing bedroom with wife were significant variables. While the husbands over 50s had less conflicts on economic matters. The those in lower age had less conflicts on household problems and parents’ home related issues. The high school graduates had higher conflicts on housework matters and personality mismatch than graduate school graduates. The husbands with relatively high monthly income had lower marital conflicts on personality mismatch and lack of communication. Husbands with one child had more marital conflicts on aggressive behaviors, parents’ home related issues, and economic problems than those with two or more children. The husbands who use separate rooms had more conflicts on child rearing, sexual life, and communication problems than those who use the room together. For the wives’ marital conflicts, age, educational level, monthly income, the number of children, and sharing bedroom with husband were significant variables. As the wives’ ages increased, child rearing conflict was lowered. The wives with relatively higher monthly income had less marital conflicts on economic matters, sexual life, housework problem, lack of communication and personality mismatch than those with lower income. The wives with more children had less conflicts on sex problem. The wives who use separate room had more conflicts on economic problems, housework problems, aggressive behaviors, communication problems, child rearing problems and personality mismatch than the those who use the room together.
Based on the findings of this research, it is sate to conclude that various aspects of the married couples’ marital conflicts affect the aggressiveness of their children. Parents who are able to identify these factors and successfully resolve conflicts will be positive models for their children in helping children to develop their own social skills and human relation skills.
