A film is an art that reconstructs a message that a person and society wants to convey through a film image. In this regard, the cinema therapy program using movies can be a way to effectively represent and express the problems of individuals. So, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the cinema therapy program on the self-esteem and solving-problem ability of the individual.
The research experiment consisted of cinema therapy program focusing on interactive cinema therapy, which is the way the therapist or assistant exists between the film text and subjects. The film used in the cinema therapy program is based on Tobias' twenty plots, according to mature, growth, and transformational styles. The films including Pepperint Candy, Wakiki Brothers, The Fingernail Moon was selected and used for the experiment.
The effect verification tools for the cinema therapy were the self-esteem scale which is developed by Rosenberg(1965) and revised by Bokhee Lee(2008) and problem-solving ability which is developed by Heppner & Peterson(1982) and revised by Jeongsu Yu and modified by Misuk Jeong(2006). 20 adults who had difficulty in self-esteem and problem solving ability was selected as the study subjects. The experimental group was divided into 10 people for the experimental group and 10 people for non-cinema therapy group. The study period was carried out 10 times for 120 minutes each once a week. In the analysis of the study data, independent sample t-test value of the two groups was verified by using the SPSS 21.0 Version for the pre-test, and the post-test results of the two groups were compared through a paired sample t-test. In addition, only the experimental group showed that there were positive changes in the individual through the cinema therapy program and the changes are recorded by interviews. The results of this study are as follows.
First, the effects of cinema therapy on the self-esteem of adults differed from the following sub-factors in the t-test which examined the difference between the pre-test and post-test average scores of the experimental group and the control group. In the experimental group compared with the control group, the effect on judgment and behavior, the effect on satisfaction with life, the effect on self value, and the effect on others gaze, including the effect on self-esteem as a whole were improved significantly.
Second, the effects of cinema therapy on the problem-solving ability of adults differed from the following sub-factors in the t-test which examined the difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group and the control group. In the experimental group compared with the control group, the effect on the problem-solving confidence, the effect on the approach-avoidance style, and the effect on the total individual control, including the effect on the problem solving ability as a whole were improved significantly.
Third, the results showed that the film therapy program based on film theory made positive changes. This were summarized as a result of questionnaires through written and interviews.
As shown in the above study, it was found that the cinema therapy program is effective in improving the self-esteem and problem-solving ability for individuals. Therefore, it is meaningful that the cinema therapy program applied with the help of the film specialist was suggested for the possibility of using the therapeutic medium to help individual psychotherapy.
