Even though numerous studies have already been performed on scalp/hair managing and positive ideas about how regular lifestyle could affect their scalp and hair managing have been studied, studies on which factor could influence male university students’ scalp and hair are still insufficient. This study has focused on male university students’lifestyle-drinking, smoking, sleeping time, dietaries and frequency of exercises which could affect their hair conditions and hair loss directly. The study has carried out basic researches which could help identify proper scalp management. This study was conducted during 15th June 2017 to 15th July 2017. Research surveyed 312 male university students from first grade to senior who currently live in Gwangju. The survey was conducted face to face and taken with prepared questions that they could fill out. Before filling out questions, they took scalp diagnosis by themselves and observed their scalp conditions with mobile microscope for more accurate results. As well as descriptive statistics, we performed cross analysis in order to find out correlation between scalp/hair conditions and following variables; differences in scalp types by lifestyle, user behaviors of scalp and hair management by scalp types, usage of scalp and hair products, user behaviors of scalp managing center, lifestyle by respondents’ general characteristics, characteristics of their scalp and hair at 0.05(5%).
The results of analysis are as follows. First, scalp types and hair conditions by different lifestyle show that amount of smoking had meaningful association (=14.136, p<.05). Second, degree of hair damage by different lifestyle shows meaningful results in exercise frequency (=13.953, p<.05). Third, user behavior of scalp and hair management by choice of shampoo shows that daily shampooing times, ways of drying hair, daily brushing times were meaningful factors (=15.309, p<.05). Forth, user behaviors of scalp management according to different scalp types shows that their responses in duration of scalp/hair management effects and their intention of scalp treatment procedure were significantly high (=28.696, p<.01). Fifth, in characteristics of scalp and hair by their health conditions, respondents who are in sound health condition had oily scalp (=19.736, p<.001) and 67.4% of them (=24.760, p<.001) checked “nothing” in problems of their scalp condition.
Sixth, hair products and user behaviors of scalp management shows meaningful results on ‘the way they prefer as scalp and hair management’ and ‘using scalp/hair management products’(=32.444, p<.01).
The result of this study shows that scalp and hair conditions of male university students are associated with some lifestyle factors such as smoking and frequency of exercise. Given that results, less smoking and regular exercise would help maintain healthy scalp condition and prevent hair loss so that it will escalate scalp conditions, decrease hair loss levels, boost their confidence in appearance.
