For disposing radioactive wastes released from nuclear power plants, medical facilities, and research institutes, the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) has been constructing repositories in Gyeongju. A cavern-based repository was completed in the first stage of construction, and near-surface repositories are planned and under construction as the second stage. In this study, Visual MODFLOW was used to develop a groundwater flow model for the disposal site in Gyeongju. The appropriateness and uncertainty of the model development were evaluated, and strategies for improving the reliability of the model were discussed. The model was calibrated by using groundwater level data measured at monitoring wells. A series of the calibration process were performed to adjust the input parameters, the hydraulic conductivity and the recharge rate in the steady state model and the specific yield in the transient model. Some methods for dividing the model domain into several small regions were examined, and Thiessen polygon was revealed to be the method of choice that could be used in the model calibration. Using the calibrated model, the change of groundwater level and seawater intrusion were predicted in the stages of construction, operation and closure of the cavern and near-surface facilities. By construction and operation of the cavern facility, the groundwater level was declined in the surrounding areas, and seawater intrusion from the East Sea was followed and finally reached the siloes in the cavern facility. The model also demonstrated that closure of the facility in the future would rapidly recover the groundwater level, and push most of the intruded seawater back into the East Sea. In case of nuclides leakage from the near-surface repository, by following the advective transport in the groundwater flow system, they would discharge into the cavern facility in the operation stage and into the East Sea on the closure stage.
