The purpose of this study is to investigate how the types of consciousness-raising activities have an effect on learning English grammar for Korean high school students. Moreover, the experiments in this study are designed to examine the effects of three different consciousness-raising activities on EFL learners with different proficiency levels. For this study, three intact classes consisting of 92 female students were participated in the experiments. They were allocated to different consciousness-raising activities: identification & consolidation (N=28), classification (N=33), or hypothesis building & checking (N=31). Students in these groups were divided into two English proficiency levels on the basis of their English scores of English subject in school. An English teacher working in the school led the experiments for about three weeks and the time on activities was controlled in 20 minutes. The English grammar ‘participle’ and ‘participial construction’ was chosen as a target grammar structure from English textbook. After three sessions of activities for each group, students were required to take the post-test immediately to measure the effectiveness of learning grammar. The pre-test and post-test contained diverse question types. All data were analyzed by paired-samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and two-way ANOVA. Two main findings of this study are as follows. First, the targeted grammar acquisition abilities of all groups have been improved significantly in the post-test much better than the pre-test. However, there are no significant differences between the three in the post-test. Second, although three consciousness-raising activities have significant effect on both high and low level students’ grammar learning, it does not show the meaningful differences among the activity types. Also, differences of consciousness-raising activities and the learners’ English proficiency levels do not show interaction effect on the grammar learning. It turns out that their proficiency levels have great impact on participants’ grammar learning than the types of activities. The study has pedagogical implications for English classes. First, although the types of consciousness-raising activities have no significant differences in learning grammar, each activity has significant effectiveness in learning grammar. Therefore, in an EFL setting, the grammar class is designed to use variety of consciousness-raising activities. Second, teachers have to make use of consciousness-raising activity types in grammar class considering the learners’ English proficiency levels. Third, it is necessary to verify the findings of the present study if the same results can be produced when different grammar structure is suggested. Finally, it would be appropriate to conduct a delayed post-test and a survey in order to measure the learners’ long-term retention and English learning attitude.
