Lower Extremity Muscle Activation in Different Knee Positions during Lunge Exercise on Stable and Unstable Surface원문보기

This study aimed to examine the differences in leg and hip muscle activation according to knee position during lunge exercise on stable and unstable surfaces. The study included 30 males and females aged 20-30 years, with no orthopedic or neurosurgical injury in the prior 6 months. Subjects performed a restricted lunge, in which the knee is placed inside the big toe, and an unrestricted lunge, in which the knee is placed outside the big toe, on a stable surface or a dynamic air cushion (Senso; TOGU, Germany), while activity of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, and gastrocnemius, was measured with surface electromyography (TELEmyo DTS, Noraxon, USA). To obtain accurate measurements, the percentage of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC) for each muscle was used for standardization in all subjects. The lunge position was held for 5 s during each of 3 trials. SPSS v. 18.0 for Windows was used to calculate descriptive statistics (mean, SD), and repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine differences between exercise postures. The results indicated that activity of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, and gastrocnemius was highest during the unrestricted lunge on an unstable surface (ρ<.05). During lunges, the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and biceps femoris showed more activity on an unstable surface than on a stable surface. In different knee positions, the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and tibialis anterior showed more activity during the unrestricted lunge. These results suggest that lunge exercise can be selectively performed using different surface conditions and knee positions to effectively strengthen specific lower extremity muscles.
