Flexible and wearable transparent conductive films have recently attracted considerable attention for their potential application in various optoelectronic devices. One of the most widely used transparent conductive materials is indium-tin-oxide (ITO) due to their superior optical properties and low sheet resistance. However, there are many limitations to using ITO in flexible and stretchable devices because it is brittle, lacks mechanical flexibility, and high temperature and high vacuum processing. Therefore, to find a substitute for ITO, great efforts have been made to develop new flexible transparent conductors such as metal nanowires, conductive polymers, and carbon-based materials (CNT). Among them, silver nanowires (Ag NW) have been gaining interest as a promising alternative to ITO due to their ease of manufacture, large scale solution processability and excellent conductivity with mechanical ductility. In this study, we focused on the development of a transparent electrode which can be used for a stretchable device by complementing each defect by hybridizing two or more materials. First, a Ag NW-SWCNT Hybrid ink solutions were prepared through hybridizing Ag NWs and SWCNT, which have excellent mechanical properties as a one-dimensional conductor and have flexible characteristics. And, their transparent conductive films could be also fabricated on the stretchable silicone polymer substrate using a simple wet coating technique of the synthesized ink solution, and these conductive films were also confirmed to be applicable to two kind of stretchable devices such as transparent heater and gas sensor. For the transparent heater application, highly stretchable transparent electrode-films were fabricated based on a composite of Ag NW networks hybridized with SWCNTs in a sandwich structure, wherein a Ag NW-SWCNT hybrid network electrode was embedded between layers of PDMS and transparent polyurethane film. When 0.025 wt% SWCNTs were hybridized with Ag NWs, a Ag NW-SWCNT network electrode, which had excellent optical properties (very low haze value of less than 1% and 95% transmittance) and a low sheet resistance value of 30 Ω/sq, was obtained through the effective electrical transportation of the NW–NW, CNT–NW, and CNT–CNT junctions. The fabricated film heaters showed environmental endurance, and no significant performance degradation was observed after the films were kept under at a high temperature of 85°C and humidity of 85%. They also exhibited high stretchability up to 20. Effective Joule heating can increase the temperature of the electrode films (30 Ω/sq) up to 68°C at a bias of 11 V. For the transparent gas sensor application, the polypyrrole-phenylalanine nano-particles coated on a stretchable transparent conductive hybrid film of Ag NW networks hybridized with SWCNTs based on PDMS. By incorporating polypyrrole-phenylalanine nano-particles on the Ag NW-SWCNT hybrid network electrode backbone, highly sensitive sensor films having transparent of more than 80% have been produced and found to respond to ammonia gas. The chemical sensors films displayed enhanced reproducible and reversible responses upon exposure to ammonia gas. These results show that applying the Ag NW-SWCNT hybrid electrode material to various types of stretchable substrates can replace the conventional ITO-based transparent electrode film (TCF) and can be applied to next-generation transparent electrode materials that require various functions.
