Considerable attention has been drawn toward one-dimensional metallic nanostructure such as rods, wires, belts, and tubes due to their unique electrical, optical, magnetic, and thermal properties, as well as their promising applications in microelectronics devices. Among them, in particular, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) have gained a significant amount of research highlight because of their high electrical and thermal conductivities. This study synthesized Ag NWs by using the polyol process and fabricated transparent conductive films (TCFs) by using Ag NWs. During the polyol process, Ag NWs were synthesized by varying an injection rate of a PVP solution and a molar ratio of PVP to AgNO3. At the injection rate of 0.5 ml/min and the molar ratio 3.0 of PVP to AgNO3, the highest synthesis yield was observed. Ag NWs were dispersed in DI water with hydroxy propyl methyl celluloses (HPMCs) with different molecular weights, which worked as thickener substances of the aqueous suspension. The viscosities of HPMCs varied according to their molecular weights. The aqueous suspension of Ag NWs was spin-coated on glass substrates, followed by washing with DI water to remove excessive HPMCs. A use of HPMC with a lower viscosity increased the σDC/σOP ratios of a TCFs, which are figures of merit to evaluate their performance having different optical transmittances and sheet resistances. Since carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) seemed to react slightly with PVP coating around Ag NWs, CMC was added together with HPMC to improve the adhesion of NWs to the substrate. Addition of CMC improved further the σDC/σOP ratios of TCFs. Heat treatment of TCFs of Ag NWs at 200 ℃ drastically reduced their sheet resistances by local melting at the contact areas between NWs, observed by SEM. Optical transmittances and sheet resistances of TCFs were evaluated by using UV-vis spectroscopy and four-point probe, respectively.
