Among recommendation techniques, collaborative filtering (CF) is commonly recognized as the most effective for implementing recommender systems. The basic idea of Typical CF is to explicit numeric rating of products of users when calculating the correlations between users (i.e. similarities among users). CF systems compare users based on their similarity, and recommend products to users based on the product evaluations of like-minded users. Thus, it is very important to compute evaluation similarities among users in CF because the recommendation quality depends on it. Typical CF uses explicit numeric ratings of items (i.e. quantitative information) of users when computing the similarities among users. In other words, users’ numeric ratings have been the main source that indicates user preference information in traditional CF. However, user numeric ratings are sometimes unable to fully reflect the actual users’ preferences. According to several studies on trust information, users may more positively accept the recommendations of reliable others when purchasing goods. Trust relationships among users can therefore be regarded as the informative source for identifying users’ actual preferences with accuracy.
Under this background, we propose a new hybrid recommender system that fuses CF and social network analysis (SNA). The proposed system adopts the recommendation algorithm which additionally reflects the results analyzed by SNA. Specifically, our proposed system is based on conventional memory-based CF, but it is designed to use both the numeric ratings of and trust relationship information between users when calculating user similarities. For this, our system creates and uses both a user-item rating matrix and user-to-user trust network. As the methods for calculating user similarity, we proposed two alternative algorithms: the first calculates the degree of similarity between users by utilizing in- and out-degree centrality—the indices which represent the central location of the social network. We named these approaches ‘Trust CF-All’ and ‘Trust CF-Conditional’ respectively. The alternative algorithm gives a high score to a neighbor when the target user trusts that neighbor directly or indirectly. Such trust relationships can be identified by searching the trust network of users. In this study, we call this approach ‘Trust CF-Search’.
In validating the proposed system’s applicability, we used experimental data provided by LibRec that crawled from the entire FilmTrust website. The data consisted of movie ratings and trust relationship networks, indicating which users to trust. The experimental system was implemented using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and UCINET 6. To examine the effectiveness of the proposed system, we compared our proposed method to a conventional CF system. The recommender system’s performances were evaluated through average MAE (mean absolute error). The analysis results confirmed that in the case of applying the in-degree centrality index of trusted network of users (i.e. Trust CF-All) without conditions, the accuracy (MAE = 0.565134) was lower than conventional CF (MAE = 0.564966). Then, in the case of applying the in-degree centrality index only to users with an out-degree centrality above a certain threshold value (i.e. Trust CF-Conditional), the proposed system slightly improved the accuracy (MAE = 0.564909) compared to traditional CF. Furthermore, the algorithm search based on the trusted network of users (i.e. Trust CF-Search) showed the best performance (MAE = 0.564846). The paired samples t-test showed that Trust CF-Search outperformed conventional CF, with a 10% statistical significance level. Our study illuminates the application of users’ trust relationship network information for facilitating electronic commerce by efficiently and accurately recommending items to users.
