The purpose of this study is to determine the muscle activity in a body according to differences in the walking steps of a horse during a horseback riding exercise. The subjects of this study were five male professional horse riders in their 20s. The physical characteristics of the subjects were as follows: 25.8 ± 1.09 years mean age, 171 ± 0.70 cm mean height, 66 ± 2.64 kg mean weight, 22.56 ± 0.92 kg/m2 body mass index, and 5.6 ± 0.89 years horseback riding experience. The walking steps of the horse used in the horseback riding exercise for analyzing the electromyography (EMG) in this study were set to walk, sitting trot, riding trot, or canter. The attachment positions of the surface electrodes were the pectoralis major, which was a muscle on the right side of the human body, the biceps brachii, the rectus abdominis, the latissimus dorsi, the erector spinae, the rectus femoris, the tibialis anterior, and the gastrocnemius. The experimental tools used to acquire the study subjects’ EMG data were Desktop Direct Transmission System, T246H surface electrode, 542 DTS EMG Sensor, and Life Cam VX-5000. A single thoroughbred horse was used in this study. The %RVC method was used in the process of standardizing muscle activity for data output. SPSS Ver. 18.0 was used for statistical processing to calculate the mean and standard deviation of the results. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to verify the difference in muscle activity according to the horse’s walking steps during the horseback riding exercise. All statistical significance levels were set at p<.05 and if a statistical difference was found, the Bonferroni method was used for post hoc test. The following conclusions were reached through analysis in this study. There was a significant difference in muscle activity in the body according to the difference in the horse’s walking steps during the horseback riding exercise. In particular, the biceps brachii, which is a muscle in the upper arm, the pectoralis major, which is a trunk muscle, the rectus abdominis, the latissimus dorsi, the erector spinae, and the tibialis anterior, which are lower extremity muscles, showed the highest muscle activity during a sitting trot. The rectus femoris, which was a lower extremity muscle, had the highest muscle activity during a riding trot. The gastrocnemius, which was a lower extremity muscle, showed the highest muscle activity during a canter. Thus, if the above conclusions are applied to education and training fields for horseback riding exercises, trainers and coaches can provide the best education and training for horseback riding technique for horseback riders and propose appropriate walking steps of horses for muscle strengthening based upon various muscle location in the human body.
