This study started from the psychoanalytic perspective that physical phenomena has mental underpinnings and therefore, eating disorders and eating behavior also originate from the psychic activity of appetite. The researcher explored Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis and the definition of appetite, its genesis, and how psychic activity alters the body and leads to eating behavior. Appetite is when the empty stomach sends the stimulus of hunger to the psyche and forces it to solve the problem of hunger, which is instinct and libido. The ego, which is modified by experience starting from infancy, governs the psychic activity of appetite and executes all thought processes in order to satisfy the manifest appetite libido. Especially, the ego modulates the muscular movements and determines the satisfaction of appetite. Through transferring movement to eating behavior via thought process, the appetite is satisfied, the stability of satiation is restored, appetite disappears, and finally the body is stabilized. The ego which is the subject of all psychic activity, not only restores psychic equilibrium via satisfaction of libido, but also restores physical equilibrium and enables one to adapt to environmental change and survive. The reason why appetite appears includes physical appetite which starts from an empty stomach, and psychological appetite which starts from internal stimuli. The initiation of physical appetite is the ordinary process of development of appetite where digestion leads to an empty stomach and intake of food will lead to satiation and the satisfaction of the instinct of hunger and discontinuation of appetite. However, in psychological appetite, despite the fact the stomach is full, psychological stimuli stemming from bodily organs disrupts the equilibrium. In the process of psychological appetite first, the stimuli which enters the ego through sensory organs is recognized as a representation that was stored in the ego, and activates the situation and affect attached to the representation which disrupts psychic equilibrium and creates appetite. Second, in order to restore equilibrium the manifest appetite libido is cathected to the related physical organ and tenses the muscle, the stomach which is the erogenous zone for appetite libido. Third, the manifest appetite libido via mental process is linked with the experience of food and emotion and forms fantasy. This fantasy is cognized and changes the facial muscles creating expression via mental processes. Fourth, at the same time it induces eating behavior and as a result the stomach, the erogenous zone, is exercised and satisfaction and equilibrium is attained, the secondary process of normal appetite is initiated. The researcher aims to help those suffering from abnormal eating behavior live a healthier and happier life by understanding that appetite is not just a symptom or cause of disorder, but a result of one’s intrinsic subjective mental activity resulting in change and action.
