A novel is a recreated story based on actual reality by a novelist. It is a plausible fiction that is likely to happen in real life. This paper begins with the questions of how the novelist should recognize the actual reality in order to acquire the characteristics of literature and what perspective should decide the choice of protagonist.
The introduction examines the 'gap' between actual reality and novel reality. A novelist intentionally creates a new world by setting the protagonist who is looking for something that does not exist in reality. This paper makes a close study on the mechanism that works in the setting through the concept of literature.
‘Reality, Negation and Affirmation’ deals with how novelists perceive actual reality. Assuming that negation has a dynamic power in itself, this paper considers how to turn it into affirmation. This paper also looks at some novel devices used by Cervantes to affirm reality in the novel Don Quixote and compares it to my novel, The Submergence of Memory.
Next, 'Stopping or Retreating' mentions the novelist's attitude to recognize reality as it is. This paper looks through "Greek Zorba" to consider that a novelist could stand out as a standstill and contemplate reality as a whole with a free perspective. This paper considers the meaning of ‘my different existence who watches my behavior’ appearing in my novel Observer.
Finally, ‘Staring at Strangeness and Creation’ explores the basic principles of creating newness. The different repetition, strangeness, and the power of negation creates a new novel reality. This paper compares the blue square, which is the ideal space pursued by the main character in ‘The Square’, with my novel ‘Touch the Shadow’ and it will show that it is different from before by affirming the negation.
A novel is a creation intentionally made with a theme consciousness by a novelist. The novelist must face the reality as it is in the state of stopping, or one step back, in other words, without the novelist's judgment. Then novelists can create a whole new world when they have an attitude to gaze at a strange world where actual reality is denied. This is the power of staring and standing back to find hope and possibilities in this created world.Novel, the Power of Standing Back and Staring
