Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, ...

Multi drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria became a serious concern in public health. Livestock were intensively monitored as sauces of MDR bacteria, whereas compan-ion animals were overlooked. I investigated level of antibiotics resistance in bacte-ria isolated from canine patients referred to Konkuk university veterinary medical teaching hospital (KU VMTH). In total 77 bacterial species including 381 isolates were isolated from 251 samples collected from different individual canine patients. Antibiotics susceptibility test using disc diffusion method for 22 antibiotics were was performed for all isolates. The results of disc diffusion tests showed that all isolates had resistance to at least eighty seven percent of tested 22 of antibiotics and were determined as MDR. The most frequently isolated bacteria were Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecium. Thirty percent of the isolates had resistance to all tested antibiotics. In addition, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 18 antibiotics belonging to 12 different classes for the 51 of the isolated E. coli strains were investigated. The results of MIC tests showed that almost E. coli isolates have strong resistance to more than 9 classes of antibiotics, averagely. Surprisingly, 65 and 10 percent of E. coli isolates were resistant to imipenem and colistin, respectively. These results suggested that companion ani-mals might be one of important sauces of MDR bacteria. The E. coli strains isolat-ed in this study could be classified as extensive drug-resistant (XDR) or MDR E. coli and this is the first report of colistin-resistant XDR E. coli isolated from a com-panion animals in Korea. The emergence of XDR E. coli in companion animals might be a potential risk to public health. To prevent the emergence and spread of XDR bacteria in companion animals, antibiotic susceptibility test should be per-formed before antibiotics treatment in clinics, and shotgun treatment should be avoided.
