Comparison of Anti-oxidative and Anti-inflammatory Activities of African Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) and Keumjanhwa (Calendula officinalis L.) Extracts원문보기

Most domestic articles call Tagetes erecta L. "marigold" and Calendula officinalis L. "calendula" in Korean, but the Korean Plant Names Index puts T. erecta L. as "African marigold" in Korean and C. officinalis L. as ”Keumjanhwa.“ And the articles published overseas use the names of African marigold for T. erecta L. and Pot marigold for C. officinalis L. While most scholarly works deal with the biological activities of C. officinalis L. alone, this study examined that of T. erecta L. as well and compared the biological efficacy of both plants' extracts. The research proved T. erecta L. as well as C. officinalis L. is good enough to be developed as materials for cosmeceuticals or cosmedicals. With the substance of T. erecta L. and C. officinalis L. extracted by 70 percent ethanol, this study checked anti-oxidative activity, anti-inflammation activity, inhibition activity of melanin biosynthesis and generating collagen, Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-I) e-pression, and cell-protecting effect against Ultraviolet-B (UVB). Anti-oxidative effect of T. erecta L. extract was one and half time higher than that of C. officinalis L. extract and total content of flanovoids in T. erecta L. extract was one and half time higher than that in C. officinalis L. extract, while both extract had the same amount of polyphenol content. Both extracts showed no sign of cytotoxicity. And both extracts showed more inhibition activity of generating Nitric Oxide (NO) than that of the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treatment group. The inhibition activity of melanin biosynthesis with both extracts was weak. This study confirmed that T. erecta L. extract inhibited MMP-I twice as much as C. officinalis L. extract did. This study also confirmed T. erecta L. extract inhibited MMP-I via Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and Extracellular Receptor Kinase (ERK) signal transduction pathway. T. erecta L. extract had more effective anti-flammatory ability than C. officinalis L. extract. This study showed that T. erecta L. extract had more biological effect than C. officinalis L. extract from the vantage point of anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, skin-whitening and skin-aging, so the studies to verify effectiveness of T. erecta L. extract should be systematically conducted.
