The communicative approach in foreign language education has been actively researched since the 1980's, and the focus of teaching and learning in language classrooms has also shifted from grammar-translation to communication and language performance. As for language evaluation, however, many teachers still use easy to measure methods to evaluate discrete elements such as certain grammatical expressions or vocabulary, which is not an entirely proper method to assess the learners' communicative ability. The role of assessment is important not only because it judges students' current language ability, but also it provides students with detailed feedback on their performance and has a positive impact on the next step of learning and instruction. Thus, assessment and instruction should not be thought of as separate. In a bid to connect assessment and instruction, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has suggested the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) standard which can be applicable in many foreign language classrooms. The IPA model describes the language performance in three different communicative modes, which are interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. This specific method of differentiating areas of language performance is a departure from the traditional way of dividing up language into four functions. To meet the IPA standard, learners should be able to creatively perform many different kinds of communicative tasks which could be commonly encountered in real world situations. These are very similar to the activities that the learners may have already experienced in their language classroom, so the assessment and the instruction are seamlessly connected to each other under the same goal of promoting learners' communicative ability. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Integrated Performance Assessment step by step, to discuss how to link the assessment and instruction via IPA, and to suggest an English IPA model which can be applicable in the English educational field in Korea. It constructed its model focusing on the intermediate level, which can be applicable in university settings. The meaning of this study is that it suggests a model of assesment and instruction based on a new style of communicative approach. There are limitations, however, in that it only demonstrates a model without practical application in real classroom settings and it is limited its applicable level to intermediate. Also, proper methods of giving feedback during the IPA should be studied in depth in future research.
