Liquid crystalline epoxy resin (LCER) is the most promising candidate for industrial composite materials with high mechanical strength and thermal conductivity. The origin of the high thermal conductivity of the LCER is the microscale molecular alignment which minimizes phonon scattering through the ordered structure. The demand on polymeric resins with high thermal conductivity has been kept increasing in the field of microelectronics to solve the problems such as malfunction, substrate degradation, reduction of lifetime of highly integrated circuits. Although the thermal conductivity of polymeric resins can be improved by addition of inorganic fillers, some important physical properties of resins such as viscosity (processablity) and mechanical strength (durability) are significantly diminished by the use of fillers with high concentration. Therefore, it is ideal to develop polymeric resins with high thermal conductivity beyond intrinsic thermal property of polymer. In addition, the increase of thermal conductivity of resin dramatically improves the thermal conductivity of polymer/filler composites as the resin is used as a matrix which directly surrounds fillers. The LCERs exhibited a polydomain structure with individual LC domains distributed in the resin matrix, resulting in higher values of storage modulus in both glassy region and rubbery plateau region and higher glass transition temperature. The unique class of thermosetting materials of liquid crystalline epoxy resins (LCERs) is formed upon curing of low molecular weight, rigid rod epoxy, and retention of a liquid crystalline phase by the three dimensional networks. The micro ordered structure of LC domains minimizes the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the resins resulting in improved thermal and mechanical properties of the resins. The main purpose of this dissertation is to synthesize and characterize the thermal, mechanical and physical properties of the liquid crystalline epoxy resin based on biphenyl mesogen. In addition, the potential use of LCERs as polymer matrices with high performance composites for efficient heat dissipation will be evaluated.
