The major purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate the significance of the grandeur Buddhist altar built in the Buddhist temples located in Gyeongsang Province in late Joseon Dynasty. A total of 88 cases of Buddhist altars out of 70 Buddhist temples in Korea were selected and analyzed. It is recognized that the majority of Korean art historians have been using the term of a ‘dais’ for a Buddhist image (須彌壇) for Buddhist altar. In this dissertation, however, I argued that the term of Buddhist altar (佛壇) is more appropriate than dais. For one thing, it is hard to find the word of a dais for a Buddhist image not only in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄) but also in any other books of poetry[poems] in Joseon period. Furthermore, it is not unusual to see more auspicious icons than Buddhistic icons on the surface of Buddhist altar. It turned out that a wide variety of icons appear on the surface of Buddhist altar. The most popular icons are peony and lotus followed by dragon, crab, carp, turtle, frog, and crane. The second most ones are unicorn, lion, phoenix, and chrysanthemum. In addition, imaginary animals like Rakshasa (Asura) were also sculptured. It is rare, but mermaid and merman included in the Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海經) also appeared. It is of interest to note grandeur Buddhist altars are found in the southern part of the Palgongsan Mountain (八公山), while plain ones are found in the northern part of the mountain in Gyeongsang Province. The Buddhist altars of the temples located in the southern part of the Palgongsan Mountain are decorated with imaginary and auspicious animals. It should be pointed out that the Buddhist temples of Baekheung and Hwanseongsa have Buddhist altars decorated with icons that appears in the the Classic of Mountains and Seas. In the case of the Buddhist temples such as Gwanlyongsa, Beomeosa, and Woonheungsa located in South Gyeongsang Province, a heavenly maid was frequently carved. It turned out that the Buddhist temples located in coastal regions of Jeolla and Gyeonggi Provinces have a strong preference to adopt a monster face as an icon for decorating Buddhist altar. By analyzing all the data I collected, I came to a conclusion that grand Buddhist altars were manufactured by monk artists and sculptors who painted and carved Buddhistic drawings and sculptures respectively. Judging from the similarities between the Buddhist face and the face that appears on Buddhist altar and the presence of the paintings of mountain god and landscape are good material evidence to argue that monk sculptor and artist respectively took part in the processes of manufacturing altar. Recently Buddhist altars were illegally disassembled in Buddhist temples and taken out by individual collectors. According to some of the inscriptions that appear on the back side of the altars, it is certain that monk artists took part in manufacturing Buddhist altar. Although Buddhist altars were located in the center of religious facilities, it was the place where mundane desire was expressed by the general public.
