According to an increase in attention in semiconductor and display industries, optoelectronics devices that utilize transparent electrodes have been actively developed. Although indium tin oxide (ITO) that has excellent transparency and low sheet resistance, ITO has easily broken and even a small stress, cracks are easily generated due to the brittleness. Therefore, there is a limit to apply flexible display that can be used in situations. Among the substitutions of ITO, silver nanowires has an advantage over ITO in both transmission and low sheet resistance. Furthermore, it can be applied to the flexible display. However, few studies have investigated the mechanisms of degradation in mechanical and thermal stress environments. In this study, degree of degradation in mechanical situations such as the folding and torsional fatigue was evaluated for application of flexible display. And also, thermal degradation test was evaluated.
When silver nanowires were subjected to tensile stress, two types of failures were observed: junction failure which occurred at the nanowire contacts and line failure. The number of each failures was measured, and the correlation between the number of failure and the resistance change was confirmed. In the case of low sheet resistance, only cracks were observed, whereas in the case of silver nanowire film with high sheet resistance, completely separated failures were observed. This is because the density of the nanowires were so small that the stress concentrated at the junction between nanowires was larger when the same stress was applied. In the folding fatigue test, the resistance decreased, and it was confirmed that mechanical welding was caused by repetitive fatigue stress. Also, as the folding radius increases, the rate of resistance reduction increases, which can be attributed to the increased amount of mechanical welding. In the largest folding radius test, the resistance was increased, which confirmed that the failure due to the repeated stress occurred. In the torsional test, it was confirmed that two kinds of segments occurred as well as the tensile stress. As the torsion angle increased, the crack shape of the failure appeared to be completely separated, which was considered to have a greater effect on the resistance increase. It was confirmed that oxidation of the nanowire, oxide particle formation, and failure occurred due to high temperature. As a result of the observation of the failure mechanism by the stepwise specimen, it was confirmed that the oxide particles were formed by diffusion of silver due to oxidation, and resulted in the depletion of silver around the oxide particles. As the temperature and time increased, the number of oxides and failures increased, and it was confirmed that the increase in resistance and the increase in the number of segments corresponded to each other. We investigated the mechanical and thermal failures in silver nanowire conductive films through resistance changes and microstructure observations. Failure analysis based on physics-of-failure analysis was conducted to analyze the failure mechanism of silver nanowires to investigate the causes of failures. Through this study, failure analysis studies can provide a direction for manufacturing reliable silver nanowires.
