Recent technological advances in the rapidly emerging areas of portable electronics and electric vehicles have sparked significant research efforts towards the development of high-performance power sources. In particular, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have received considerable attention as one of the most promising energy storage devices because of their attractive features, such as high energy density, excellent cycling stability, no memory effect, low self-discharge rate, and environmental friendliness. However, progress in improving LIBs is still quite slow owing to the limited theoretical capacity and the serious drawbacks of the electrode materials. Thus, the recent research on LIB has mainly focused on the improvement of anode materials. Hence, I propose advanced approaches for improving electrochemical performance of LIBs. The first part is ‘Cycling Stability with High Capacity'. Based on the rational design and engineering of electrode materials, advanced strategies have been introduced to improve the specific capacity of LIB anodes as alternatives to conventional graphite with a low theoretical specific capacity of 372 mAh g–1. In chapter 2, the CNF/Co3O4 nanopyramid core-shell structure with the outstanding cycling stability with high capacity is successfully proved. The main reasons for the performance improvement. are an introduction of carbon composites and a efficient utilization of Co3O4. In chapter 3, the carbon-encapsulated porous hollow nanotubes based on Mn2O3 electrode is designed to accommodate the large volume change, leading to excellent cycling stability with high capacity. Theses results indicate that carbon-encapsulated structures with well-defined pore and interior void spaces can enable efficient insertion/de-insertion of Li-ions during cycling. In chapter 4, the improved cycling stability with high capacity of the high-dispersed Si and TiO2 nanoparticles in a carbon nanofiber can be explained as follow. The high-dispersed Si nanoparticles can provide effective accommodation of the volume change of Si nanoparticles and increased electroactive sites of Si nanoparticles, which leads to improved electrochemical performance. The second part is ‘Ultrafast Cycling with High Capacity'. I suggest a advanced nano architecture for increasing electrical conductivity, faster ionic diffusion, and rapid volume change. In chapter 5, the Sb-doped SnO2 (ATO) nanoparticles sandwiched between the CNF and the carbon skin shows the enhanced ultrafast cycling stability with high capacity. Theses results indicate that good dispersion of ATO nanoparticles, an increased electrical conductivity from doping effect of Sb in the SnO2 lattice, a sandwich structure with the carbon skin greatly helps to the electrochemical performance. In chapter 6, the tunneled mesoporous carbon nanofibers with embedded ZnO nanoparticles having the improved ultrafast cycling stability with high capacity can be demonstrated. The introduction of CNF matrix, the well-dispersed ZnO nanoparticles, the tunneled stcuture with high mesopore distributions is key factor to improve the electrochemical performance. In chapter 7, the mesoporous carbon skin on Si nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanofibers are achieved the excellent ultrafast cycling stability with high capacity. The improved performance can be defined as introduction of an extra carbon skin and development of mesoporous structure on skin, leading to an outstanding high-rate performance and an excellent ultrafast cycling stability. I believe that the several strategies reported here can be utilized to guide the improvement of advanced electrode materials and will bring novel insight to further the development of cycling stability and ultrafast cycling performance for LIBs.
