This thesis focuses on geotechnical aspects of seismic hazard assessment using geographic information system (GIS). Seismic hazard assessment of the study area is determined by four kinds: (1) ground motion, (2) liquefaction, (3) landslide and (4) tsunami. Processing methods of each seismic hazard assessment are as follows. (1) The ground motion is represented by peak ground acceleration (PGA) which multiplication of the seismic zone factor of Busan, recurrence interval of 2,400 year’s factor of Korea and the amplification factor. The amplification factor decided based on the local site classification criteria of the preceding research using the average shear velocity to the bedrock. (2) The liquefaction hazard is evaluated in terms of the Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI) because of lack of geotechnical information for a detailed liquefaction assessment. On the basis of Standard Penetrate Test (SPT) data, LPI is computed using the simplified procedure by Iwasaki (1985) and Seed & Idriss (1971). (3) The landslide hazard assessment caused by earthquakes is estimated by Newmark’s sliding block analysis, and the safety factor of landslide is calculated based on the limit equilibrium by using site response from geometrical characteristics of slope. (4) Inundation level caused tsunami was determined by integrating the run-up heights of the virtual earthquake in preceding the study, the tsunami run-up heights in the past and the maximum tidal heights observed from 1965 to present in the study area. The results of the analysis are as follows. (1) The amplification factor is high in Busan Bay, Suyoung Bay and Songjeong station on the short-term earthquake and in the western plains of the Nakdonggang River estuary on the long-term earthquake. This is due to the characteristic that the amplification of the seismic wave of the long-term earthquake is larger than that of the short-term earthquake. The result of the ground motion applying 0.220 g which is input acceleration of bedrock, the Nakdonggang River estuary showed 0.5 g on the short-term and long-term earthquake. But Busan Bay and Suyeong Bay showed more than 0.6 g only on the short-term earthquake. (2) As a result of the liquefaction hazard map, the Nakdonggang River estuary, Suyoung Bay, Busan Bay and Gamcheon Bay showed a very high liquefaction potential with LPI of more than 15 regardless of the seismic waves. Although the PGA was relatively low, but it is estimated that the depth of the bedrock is shallow or content of sand of soil is high in the region where the LPI value is high. (3) Landslide hazard were very unstable in slope due to the Newmark’s displacement of slope exceeding 150 mm in Mt. Baekyangsan, Mt. Daleumsan, Mt. Gaejwasan and Mt. Daeunsan. In the region with Newmark’s displacement of 10 mm or more and less than 150 mm, the effect on the short-term earthquake is more influential than on long-term earthquake, because the estimated depth of the soil is shallower than 7 m. (4) The Noksan Industrial Complex in Gangseo-Gu, Sinpyeong Jangrim Industrial Complex in Saha-Gu, Suyoung Bay, and Busan Bay have been largely inundated due to tsunami. Since the dispersion of the borehole data used in this study is uneven, it is expected that the result will be different according to the interpolation. It is considered that the term of the seismic waves amplified during an actual earthquake can be changed according to the characteristics of the ground because the mountainous area with shallow depth of bedrock and the estuary and harbors such as soft soil are mixed. In addition, the surface fault rupture hazard map should be evaluated using the length, segmentation, and displacement of the active faults. However, the active faults reported in the study area to date are point data, which is insufficient to grasp the overall fault characteristics for making the hazard map. Therefore, it can be evaluated after additional study of the active faults. The results of this study can be applied not only to GIS-based scenarios for prediction of seismic hazard, but also for policies and measures to mitigate earthquake risk.
