Porous SiC membranes offer a great potential for water filtering applications. From the perspective of materials science, achieving an optimal pore size distribution along with reasonable strength is essential in realizing its final application. We report the fabrication of porous SiC by oxidation-bonding technique obtained by the formation of mullite from the reaction between SiO2 and Al2O3 from oxidation of SiC and Ti3AlC2 respectively. Prior to utilization, the Ti3AlC2 was preheat-treated at 400-1200°C and analysis on the phase evolution was conducted thoroughly. Temperature of 1200°C was chosen as the best preheat treatment temperature for Ti3AlC2, thus it is used in this study. The preliminary test showed that 30 vol. % Ti3AlC2-added porous SiC exhibited 43.65% higher strength compared to 30 vol. % Al2O3-added porous SiC prepared under similar conditions. Mullite neck and the presence of Ti3AlC2 after heat treatment were verified using SEM-EDS analysis and XRD. The Ti3AlC2-added SiC powder was added with 17.65 wt. % tapioca starch and 40 wt. % water, to form a hollow tube membrane by extrusion using speed of 20 mm/min. The extruded bodies were dried at room temperature for 12 h and then heat-treated at 1100-1400°C for 3 h. Characterization of density, O-ring strength, and corrosion resistance showed excellent results suggesting good potential for application. The heat-treated porous body was then coated with SiC slurry using dip-coating followed by firing at 1200°C for 1 h. Various immersion times; 1, 2, and 3 min showed an increase in film thickness ranging from 22.46-36.15 μm. Although the non-uniform particle sizes were observed, the porosimetry test showed narrow pores size of 150 nm which is good for rejecting contaminants with sizes larger than 150 nm.
