The international community faces significant challenges called overcoming poverty and improving the quality of life in developing countries. In such reality, the international community beside the UN pay attention to Korea’s experience of development, and as a plan to help developing countries overcome poverty, they are constantly trying to research the Saemaul Undong and share the experience. To effectively cope with the international community’s demands for Korea’s sharing experience of Saemaul Undong, it is necessary to properly understand the Saemaul Spirit, and to understand Saemaul Spirit properly, it is needed to conduct research on the origin and essence of this spirit. It is because when a value is grafted onto another country with different history and culture, it is essential to define the concept, and it is also required to research the origin of the value for a right concept definition. Thus, this study aims to analyze the characteristics of Hyangyak and Dure as Korean traditional community spirits and those of Saemaul Spirit and verify similarities and differences between these two spirits by comparatively analyzing them in terms of Situational Theory, Structural-functional Theory, Epistemology and Social Cohesion as relevant social theories, further providing implications for sharing and expanding of Saemaul Spirit. Particularly, this study examined the characteristics of Hyangyak and Dure community spirits and those of Saemaul Spirit through literature review and attempted to verify the literature review results and secure explanation power by carrying out a survey on community residents’ consciousness. The results of this study can be summarized as below. It was found that in terms of Situational Theory, the similarities between these two spirits were their occurrence backgrounds and suitability of overcoming difficult situations of the times, while the difference between them was the subject of generating each spirit. In terms of Structural-functional Theory, the similarities were arranged as residents’ consciousness reform, common goal attainments through collaborations and organizational efficiency and productivity improvements, while the difference was found to be residents’ enhanced confidence called ‘We can do it’ by experiencing the outcome of Saemaul Undong in person. In terms of Epistemology, the similarities were both the spirits were highly evaluated as a Korean representative community spirit and the essence of both the spirits was inherited and utilized even in the modern society, while the difference was the international community’s perception of the expandibility and availability of Saemaul Spirit. In terms of Social Cohesion, the similarities were realizing social integration, improving trust, embracing all the society members and improving a feeling of happiness in the community, while the differences were entire society members’ participation after overcoming the existing social status system through Saemaul Spirit and securing democracy in the decision-making process. Based on the literature review and the consciousness survey, this study came to the following conclusions. Firstly, Saemaul Spirit contains Korean traditional community spirit elements like Hyangyak and Dure, and it can be regarded as a Korean unique community spirit that has been developed fit for situations of the modern society. Secondly, the community spirit of Hyanyak and Dure and Saemaul Spirit have a thread of connection since both of them occurred in the same background that people had to solve significant tasks of the times, such as reforming residents’ consciousness, overcoming poverty and solving labor shortage for collective farming, and their values are still highly assessed even today. Thirdly, the community spirit of Hyangyak and Dure was formed by residents’ voluntary wills, while Saemaul Spirit occurred under the influence of national leaders’ philosophy and policy intention. Fourthly, the community spirit of Hyangyak and Dure was not based on a democratic consciousness that all the residents be equal, but Saemaul Spirit helped residents overcome the existing social status system and form a democratic decision-making system. Lastly, it is necessary to share with developing countries, residents’ spirit of mutual helps, creating a cooperative climate, promoting spirits of diligence, self-help and cooperation and improving confidence in ‘We can do it’based on their direct experience of village developments, and it is also required to reestablish the key values of Saemaul Spirit in consideration of their economic and social environments in order to share this spirit with developing countries. Overall, it is expected that this study will be able to help understand the characteristics of the community spirit of Hyangyak and Dure and those of Saemaul Spirit in general and specifically understand the common notion that the spirit of sharing from Korean traditional community spirits is included in Saemaul Spirit. Besides, this study provides implications for sharing Saemaul Undong with developing countries and expanding the spirit into them so that proverty can be overcome all over the global community.
