The research question of this study is ‘what is the experience of impoverished parents with children with chronic diseases?’ to propose practical and policy intervention methods from social welfare point of view to achieve in-depth understanding of their experience and provide effective support in improving their lives. This study was conducted as a qualitative case study, and when analyzed the experience of parents with sick children, a total of 315 meaningful statements, 30 central meanings, 13 subtopics and 6 fundamental topics. These experiences were composed under the categories of ‘exhausted life from passed down chronic disease’, ‘wanting to be an isolated island’, ‘destined cycle of sickness and poverty’, ‘lost and hanging on a cliff’, ‘a strand of hope in despair: job, family and welfare service’, and ‘becoming a candlelight for one another in a long dark tunnel’, based on the statements of parent with firsthand experience in the impoverished life with children with chronic diseases. First, the lower-level topics of [exhausted life from passed down chronic disease] are ‘passed down chronic disease’, ‘reality of bearing child’s disease’, and ‘life confined in a disease’. Most of the participants already experienced poverty and chronic diseases prior to their children being diagnosed with a chronic disease. The realization that their child also had to bear the burden of chronic disease for life became an increased affliction on their already hard lives. Upon a diagnosis, the parents began a life of long-term treatment that encapsulated their lives for years. The diagnosis and treatment of a chronic disease led to exhausted life from passed down chronic disease for the parents. Second, the lower-level topics of [wanting to be an isolated island] are ‘isolated life through labeling and prejudice’, and ‘no one understands me’. What was most difficult in the course of their children’s treatment was ‘labeling and prejudice by others’. Participants and their children lost self-esteem by others, which often led to anxiety and sociophobia. They eventually came to resent the world and gradually ceased all what used to be active social activities, leading a life of isolation. These unfortunate events not only pulled them apart from other but, in due course, from their family members, deepening family conflict. At the end, they closed their hearts and chose to live a life as an isolated island. Third, the lower-level topics of [destined cycle of sickness and poverty] are ‘unable to focus on treatment for child’, and ‘being poor is a sin’. All participants chose being unable to provide treatment in timely manner attributable to being poor as ‘the most repentant event as parents’. Before the diagnosis, being poor was just an inconvenience, but after the diagnosis, it became a sin on their part. Poverty led to weaker health of children and weaker health of children led to even greater poverty for the participants. Taking on a regular job became unattainable for them and medical bills started to pile up. These participants were not able to break away from the vicious cycle of being unhealthy due to poverty. Fourth, the lower-level topics of [lost and hanging on a cliff] are ‘lack of information on nurturing sick child’ and ‘impossible times’. From the time of diagnosis on their children until becoming accustomed to their new lives of treatment, the participants never had a chance for a proper training or received a manual. They never met someone who had the same experience nurturing for a sick child and help them. Each and every participant had to find solutions to their problems on their own, which was prone to countless trial and error. Most of them are still unsure about their methods of sick child nurturing. In worst cases, some parents who could not bear the burden of parenting their sick children lost any will to live and attempted suicide. As such, the participants lost their way and hanged on a cliff, experiencing contemplating for death. Fifth, the lower-level topics of [a strand of hope in despair: job, family and welfare service] are ‘fortunate human relationship and support network are what brace me’ and ‘stability and hope in life by welfare services’. Some participants were able to find support in their jobs, family and welfare services through fortunate human relationship. Through the supports, they were able to narrowly escape death and realized stability and hope in life that could ‘help the child and thereby helping me’. For them, it was a precious strand of hope found in despair. Sixth, the lower-level topics of [becoming a candlelight for one another in a long dark tunnel] are ‘nevertheless, my child is the reason for my life’ and ‘the unabandonable hope: preparing for the future of my child’. Through the prolonged nurturing for their children, the participants came to grant meanings to their roles and responsibilities and grasped that the purpose of their lives were their children. Like any other parents, the participants pondered for the preparation of their children’s future. They are just sorry that they won’t be comprehensive in supporting their children who would have difficulty in self-sufficiency due to their physical and psychological impairments. Then again, the parents wanted to, at least, be a tiny candle lighting the way of their children and also wanted for their children to the light of their existence as well. From the results of this study, it was concluded that the experience of impoverished parents with children with chronic diseases could be summed up as ‘living in the vicious cycle of chronic diseases and poverty’. Based on the results, practical and policy implications and suggestions for future studies were proposed from the viewpoint of social welfare.
