Labor poetry that has received attention following the protests in June 1987 was hit by the collapse of the Eastern Socialist system around 1990s. Since the massive layoffs of laborers due to the financial crisis in 1997, ideology-oriented labor movement lost much of its power. Worker poets Park No-hae, Park Young-geun and Baek Mu-san were shocked and began to demonstrate possibility of poetic transformation. Park No-hae and Baek Mu-san used aliases that captured their philosophy of labor liberation. However, their ideas and philosophy also changed through the transition period. Parts 3 and 4 of Park No-hae’s The True Beginning(1993) succeeded to the ideological purpose of The Early Dawn of Labor(1984). On the other hand, Part 1 and 2, written in a transitional situation during his imprisonment amidst the collapse of ideology, begin to show compositional attitude. This is similar with the poetic transformation of Baek Mu-san. Baek Mu-san, through his Time of Humans(1996), breaks his aggressive competitiveness and leaves the labor scene to investigate humanity in a compositional attitude. Both poets can be evaluated as a product of keen awareness of the state of affairs rather than an opportunistic turn. In contrast to the two poets of rational reflection, Park Young-geun, through The Story of Kim Mi-soon(1993) showed the image of a wandering worker overwhelmed by emotions. Following that, his hopeless pathos is further developed in Does the star still open its eyes(1997). Under the IMF economic crisis, Park No-hae, in The Winter Flowers(1999), expresses religious and meditative attitude by emphasizing the value of life of ecological coexistence and realizing the remoteness of problem solving through institutions. This is similar with the perception that Baek Mu-san expressed in The Path Belongs to the Field(1999). However, while Park No-hae depicts hope in the scene and emphasizes practical alternatives, Baek Mu-san emphasizes the limitation that labor itself cannot come out of the capitalist order. Baek Mu-san consistently criticized the dogmatism and the irrationality within the labor movement. On the other hand, Park Young-geun expressed the sadness and futility after his separation from his partner who was a lover and his comrade in That Flower is Discomforting(2002). In conventional standards, Park Young-geun is feminine, emotional, and overly defeated in comparison to the masculine, rational tone of Park No-hae and Baek Mu-san. Park No-hae and Baek Mu-san have lost substantiation and flowed into ideological and universal meditation. On the other hand, Park Young-geun held on to realism. All three poets actively utilized the concept of 'path'. While Park No-hae’s 'path' means a pursuit of ecological value, Baek Mu-san's ‘path' is used to symbolize idle nature, the core of Taoist philosophy, or Buddhist nonpossession. Park Young-geun, immersed in tragic sentimentality, symbolically demonstrated the wandering reality of loss and sorrow. Baek Mu-san has a history of actively participating in a strike demonstration while working for a chaebol enterprise, compared to Park No-hae and Park Young-geun who were at small and medium-sized labor sites. This reveals a difference in the response to the collapse of the ideological system. Although Park No-hae chooses transformation of consciousness through a fundamental skepticism of the socialist system itself, Baek Mu-san shows great disillusionment with the factionalism and opportunism revealed through the concrete struggle of the workplace rather than ideology itself. The labor poetry of worker poets can be divided into ideology-driven struggle demagogic poetry and individual lyric poetry which focuses on the joys and sorrows of the workers. In general, struggle poetry was used as a tool for purpose-aware propaganda agitation. Therefore, the creator of the poetry was not just a poet, but rather served a greater role in labor movement or demagogue. The change of perception of worker poets in the 1990s, who led the labor movement during the military dictatorship, is significant. Not all worker poets kept silent because labor poetry underwent transition or intimidation. Although Park No-hae made a methodological shift from ideology to community movement, and Baek Mu-san had his transitional period, many worker poets, in their respective positions and situations, still showed efforts to take a leap in the dark.
