Hiking is an exercise people can easily access. It has been steadily gaining popularity as a sport for all for many years and many people visit mountains every year. As the number of hikers has been steadily increasing, the number of hiking accidents also has been increasing year by year. This study analyzes the hiking accidents in Bukhansan National Park, which has the largest number of visitors, and focuses on the relationship between hiking accidents and weather conditions, one of the factors of hiking accidents. The hiking accident data for this study were collected by Seoul 119 special rescue services, police mountain rescue teams, and Korea national park services. This data was obtained by requesting information from each government agency. Weather condition data on the Korea Meteorological Administration website were used to analyze the cause of hiking accidents. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS program version 23, and descriptive statistic analysis, frequency analysis, and cross analysis were used depending on the purpose of the data analysis. There were 870 hiking accidents in Bukhansan National Park in last five years(2012~2016) and they were classified into four types: slip down/fall, acute disease/chronic disease, distress and rock climber accidents. The greatest number of accidents occurred in autumn, and the highest number of mountain accidents occurred between 14-16pm. Moreover, hiking accidents occurred on weekends more frequently than on weekdays. Based on the results of the analysis of hiking accidents, the relationship between weather conditions and the hiking accidents are as follows: As a result of analyzing hiking accidents by season, First, in spring, hiking accidents in Bukhansan National Park occurred most frequently when temperatures were between 8.1~10°C, 1.6~3.3㎧ wind speed, 51~60% humidity, when there was less than 1 hour and 10.1~11 hours of sunshine, and clear weather. Second, in summer, hiking accidents occurred most frequently when temperatures were between 22.1~24°C, with wind speeds of 1.6~3.3㎧, 61~70% humidity, 12.1 hours of sunshine, and cloudy weather. Third, in autumn, hiking accidents occurred most frequently when temperatures were at 22.1~24°C, with wind speeds of 0~1.5㎧, 61~70% humidity, 9.1~10 hours of sunshine, and cloudy weather. Fourth, in winter, hiking accidents occurred most frequently when temperatures were between 0.1~2°C, with wind speeds of 1.6~3.3㎧, 41~50% humidity, 8.1~9 hours of sunshine, and clear weather. As a result of analyzing hiking accidents by type, acute disease/chronic disease occurred most frequently when temperatures were in the range of 18.1~20°C, with wind speeds 1.6~3.3㎧, 61~70% humidity, 9.1~10 hours of sunshine, and cloudy weather. Slip down/fall occurred most frequently when temperatures were in the range of 22.1~24°C, with wind speeds between 1.6~3.3㎧, 61~70% humidity, less than one hour of sunshine, and clear weather. Distress occurred most frequently when temperatures were between 20.1~24°C, with wind speeds 1.6~3.3㎧, 61~70% humidity, 9.1~10 hours of sunshine, and clear weather. Rock climber accidents occurred most frequently when temperatures were between 22.1~24°C, with wind speeds between 1.6~3.3㎧, 61~70% humidity, 9.1~10 hours of sunshine, and cloudy weather. Hiking accidents are caused by multiple factors. Therefore, people who visit mountains should be check weather conditions beforehand by using an application or viewing the weather forecast. Hikers can prevent hiking accidents by preparing for predictable weather conditions. In order to prepare for hiking accidents, it is important to dress properly, take care of food and prepare the equipment appropriately by considering the conditions on the mountain they plan to hike and by reviewing their hiking itinerary. In addition, since Korea has distinctive characteristics for each season, it is necessary to identify the risk groups for seasonal weather conditions and prepare for accidents so that hiking has a positive effect on our lives.
