In this study, hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of galvanized Al-free and –added Fe-18Mn-0.6C (wt.%) twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels were investigated. The inhibition layer was formed at the interface between the coating layer and TWIP steel matrix, and inhibited the formation of the Fe-Zn intermetallic layers. Both TWIP steels exhibited η-Zn coating layer and Fe-Al inhibition layer which was composed of FeAl, FeAl2 and Fe2Al5. The tensile properties of TWIP steels were little changed after galvanizing. To investigate HE in galvanized TWIP steels, hydrogen was charged into the galvanized specimen by electrochemical method, and tensile tests and TDA analysis were performed. Both galvanized TWIP steels showed a decrease in El by ~2% after hydrogen charging. TDA analysis exhibited that although hydrogen was also released from the TWIP steel matrix, HE did not occur because the amount of released hydrogen was very small. Most of the hydrogen was trapped at the interface between the η-Zn layer and Fe-Al inhibition layer. Based on the TDA results, the H desorption energy was calculated to be 52 kJ mol-1 for the η-Zn layer and 60.1 kJ mol-1 for the Fe-Al inhibition layer in the Zn-Al galvanizing, which are higher than that of the TWIP steel matrix (35 kJ mol-1). Especially, it was confirmed that the Fe-Al inhibition layer acted as a strong trapping site of hydrogen. Consequently, it was concluded that the inhibition layer had a decisive influence on improving the HE resistance of the TWIP steels. Moreover, the trapped hydrogen was observed through the silver decoration method. The silver particles, which indirectly indicate the existence of hydrogen, were observed at the interface between the η-Zn layer and the Fe-Al inhibition layer. After fracture, silver particles were mainly observed around the crack, and it was assumed that hydrogen diffused to the locally stress concentrated region due to tensile stress, inducing crack initiation.
