The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of body composition, exercise function, and height growth for 12 weeks customized exercise program on growth stage in low-height students. For this study, I conducted a 12 - week personalized exercise program for 40 low-height students who came to K - Growth specialization center for training. The factors of body weight(kg), body fat(%), flexibility(cm), VO₂max(ml/kg/min), leg muscle function(Peak TQ / BW %), waist muscle function (Peak TQ / BW %) , and growth of height(cm) were analyzed. The body composition(body weight, %body fat), physical functions(flexibility, VO₂max, leg muscle function, waist muscle function), and growth rates(growth of height) were measured at the beginning of the exercises(1st) and after 12-weeks exercises(2nd). For the data, all measurements are represented by mean and standard deviation using SPSS statistical package(version 23.0). Statistical level of significance was set up as a=.05.
The results of this study were shown as follows:
At first, body composition: After regular 12-weeks exercises, the body weight of fast growth period changed significantly than the other growth period. Since there were significant differences on body weight during various periods, the increase of weight is necessary for growth. About the %body fat, fast growth period also changed significantly than the other growth period. However, there were no significant differences on the change of %body fat. Therefore, it can be proved that the rapid increase or decrease of body fat is unfavorable for growth.
Secondly, body function: After regular 12-weeks exercises, flexibility of general growth period was more significant than the other growth period. There were significant differences on the change of flexibility, so it can be proved that the increase of flexibility is necessary for growth. VO₂max flexibility of non growth period were more significant than the other growth period. There were significant differences on VO₂max. It can be proved that the increase of VO₂max is necessary for growth. Leg and waist muscle function of non growth period were more significant than the other growth period. There were significant differences on leg and waist muscle function. It can be proved that the exercise program which can improve leg and waist muscle function is important and necessary for growth.
Thirdly, growth rates: After regular 12-weeks exercises, the height increment of general growth period is 2.1±0.6cm, the height increment of fast growth period is 2.2±0.4cm, the height increment of reduction growth period is 1.2±0.5cm, the height increment of non growth period is 0.5±0.2cm. The height increment of fast growth period was more significant than the other growth period. There were significant differences on the growth of height.
In conclusion, it can be proved that for body composition, the increase of weight and the decrease of body fat are necessary for growth. For body function, the increase of flexibility, VO₂max, and leg &waist muscle function, are necessary and important for growth. It is worth mentioning that exercise program works best especially in general growth period and fast growth period. Therefore, doing customized exercise program regularity from childhood is conducive to height growth.
