This paper describes the flow characteristics and propulsion efficiency of the stern due to the shape change of K-duct, a pre-swirl duct developed by Korea Research Institute of Ships &Ocean Engineering (KRISO) in order to apply to Supramax class ship type, by numerical analysis. First, the open water test of the target propeller and the resistance and self-propulsion before and after the attachment of the K-duct to the ship were computed and the calculation result was confirmed by comparing this result with the model test results. After that, resistance and self-propulsion calculations were performed by the same numerical method when the K-duct was changed into four different shapes. The efficiency of the other four cases was compared with the delivery horsepower in the model scale and the flow characteristics of the aft section were studied as the velocity and pressure distributions in the area between the duct end and the propeller plane. For the computation, STAR-CCM +, a general-purpose flow analysis program, was used and the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation was applied. MRF (Moving Reference Frame) method was used for the propeller rotating motion and SST k-ω turbulence model was applied for the turbulence model. As a result, it was confirmed that the MRF method is slightly different from the experimental result and the case study using Rigid Body Motion (RBM) method. In this study, the MRF method was used to save time, but the verification of the comparative study about superiority of the existing K-duct and four ducts was confirmed.
