The bridge-to-ground connection section abutment approach block installation section is a weak point of the structure because of the difference in stiffness, the possibility of differential settlement and movement of abutment due to train load and impact load is very high. There is a high risk that the rate of occurrence of the differential subsidence will increase at the bridge abutment backfill, which is smaller than the support stiffness of the abutment. This is a major factor in the stability of driving and lowering of ride comfort of trains. The stress is greater than expected in the actual design due to poor compaction, resulting in damage to the roadbed and track structure and a reduction in the life of structure. For this purpose, cement treated gravel is used in the case of railway abutment, and the design standard is strictly controlled by minimizing abutment flow by suppressing settlement and reducing earth pressure acting at a abutment. However, in the case of large-sized gravel, it is difficult to construct large-scale experimental equipments and samples. In addition, conservative abutment design is applied by applying internal friction angle φ = 30~35°conventionally without proper evaluation of stability and horizontal earth pressure affecting decision of standard section and stability in abutment design. In this research paper, the strength constants that can be applied to the design through the mechanical evaluation of the strength and settlement characteristics of the cement treated gravel used in the railway abutment. On the basis of this, the degree of internal friction angle and active earth pressure influence on the stability of abutment was evaluated. In the case of abutment, the behavior of the cement treated gravel was analyzed through Cyclic Loading Model Test and Full Scale Test. In case of cement treated gravel, the strength enhancement effect by cement increased about 13 times as compared with that of ordinary gravel after 28 days curing. Large Direct Shear Test results showed that the internal friction angle was 45°or more after 3 days of curing. The recovery elastic modulus of the cement treated gravel was measured to be about 3 times higher than that of the ordinary gravel. From the results of CBR, Large Triaxial Compression Test and Large Shear Direct Test, it is considered that the design constant of cement treated gravel can be applied at 45°. As a result of evaluating the long term earth pressure change and settlement characteristics of the cement treated gravel attached to the abutment backfill through the Cyclic Loading Model Test and the Full Scale Test, the earth pressure of about 80% or more was decreased compared to the initial earth pressure. It is considered that the earth pressure acting on the abutment is very small. Therefore, it is considered that the use of the cement treated gravel in the present abutment standard section will be advantageous in terms of maintenance. Based on the analysis of wheel - rail trains interaction between standard cross section of domestic high speed railway and UIC standard cross section, the results of train running analysis on the standard cross section show almost similar behavior in two cross sections. As a result of analysis of the train running, assuming the weakest track fault in the standard limit section of the domestic standard cross section, the reduction rate of the wheel off loading, the contact force of the rail, and the vertical acceleration of the vehicle were largely caused by the disorder of track. Stress was increased in cement treated gravel layer. Therefore, the track flatness due to the disorder of track can be a very important management criterion in the abutment connection part, so it is considered that careful management should be carried out. Finally, considering the strength characteristics of cement treated gravel, the external stability was evaluated for abutment sections assumed as direct foundation and pile foundation according to internal friction angle. As a result of the evaluation, stability of sliding, over turning, and bearing capacity increased, suggesting a more reasonable abutment design method.
