Freiberg's sign, Pace's ...

Piriformis syndrome is a disease that includes lumbar pain and various symptoms of the lower limbs. At an oriental medicine clinic, we conducted a clinic study that aimed to study the effects of pharmacopuncture on patients afflicted with piriformis syndrome. The goal of this study was to learn more about piriformis syndrome and the effects of pharmacopuncture on it. The study sample consisted of 137 piriformis syndrome patients who visited clinic from July 1, 2012 to November 15, 2013 to receive pharmacopuncture. We observed the following variables: sex, age, five major symptoms, locations of symptoms, four physical examination views, Freiberg's sign, Pace's sign, localized pain in piriformsis muscle, initial and final numerical rating scale (NRS) ratings, and how long each patient has been having symptoms. Patients with a final NRS≤3 were classified into the improvement group (n=50), while patients with a final NRS>4 were classified into the non-improvement group (n=53). The statistical methods used were the independent t-test, χ² test, and logistic regression analysis. The variables used in logistic regression analysis included sex, age, variation of NRS, 4 physical examination views, Freiberg's sign, and Pace's sign. The study showed significant differences between the two groups in variation of NRS, amount of lumbar pain, Freiberg's sign, Pace's sign, and term (α=0.05). The conclusion of this study is that the improvement group showed more favorable changes in Freiberg's sign and Pace's sign than the non-improvement group.
