In this thesis, accurate and efficient numerical solvers on the prediction of cavitation phenomena and its radiated hydro-acoustic flow noise is developed. Especially, the effects of viscous flux vectors and cavitation models on the prediction of generation, development and extinction of cavity structures and its radiated hydro-acoustic flow noise are numerically examined in detail. Cavitation is the phenomena that the phase of fluid is changed from liquid water to water vapor under certain pressure criterion which known as the vapor pressure. These cavitation phenomena are numerically analyzed by solving full three dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations based on computational fluid dynamics techniques. To consider the phase interchanges between liquid water and water vapor, homogeneous mixture approach is applied. The mass transfer between two phases are modelled by cavitation model. Because of the large disparities of sound speed and density between pure fluid and mixture state, the numerical solution becomes unstable. To overcome these problems, preconditioning and dual-time stepping techniques are applied. Furthermore, generally used turbulence model tend to over-predict the turbulent viscosity in wake region. In cavitating flow problems, the over-predicted turbulent viscosity depresses the re-entrant jet, and thus unsteadily fluctuating cavity structures can’t be generated. The filter-based modification is used to reduce the over-predicted turbulent viscosity. The developed numerical solver is validated by experimental results of stable cavitation flow problems. Based on the predicted flow field results, radiated hydro-acoustic flow noise from cavitating flow is predicted by using Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation which originate from Lighthill’s acoustic analogy. In the use of Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation, some modification is applied to properly model the effects of cavitation structures because it dominantly affect to the hydro-acoustic pressure waves in underwater. The effects of cavity structures are modelled by monopole source term, and the effects of hydro-dynamic forces on submerged body surfaces are modelled by dipole source term. The quadrupole source term is neglected in this thesis because its energy is relatively very small compare to other two sources. To examine the effects of the viscous flux vectors, three different viscous flux treatment methods are introduced; viscous lagging, full viscous and thin-layer approaches. The viscous lagging approach contains only explicit part of viscous flux vectors, therefore it has limitation to account for the viscous effects. On the other hand, full viscous method contains all the viscous flux vectors. Therefore, it can be the most complete method mathematically. Between these two methods, the compromised method, thin-layer approximation is introduced. With the thin-layer approximation, only normal directional viscous flux terms are included in governing equations which most affecting directional component. The viscous lagging approach show relatively large cavity structures, because of strong re-entrant jet phenomena on the hydrofoil surfaces. Consequently, viscous lagging approach show large monopole source contributions. The full viscous method and thin-layer approximation show almost same results in terms of time-varying shapes of cavity structures, X and Y directional velocity profiles, thickness of developed cavity structures, radiated hydro-acoustic waves and noise spectrums. However, the thin-layer approximation requires only 52% of computation cost compared to full viscous method. The effects of cavitation models also investigated with four widely used cavitation models; Merkle’s model, Kunz’s model, Singhal’s model and Zwart’s model. The former two models are come from the simple physical basis on the effects of local vapor pressure. On the other hand, latter two models are based on the dynamics of vapor bubbles which can be illustrated by Rayleigh-Plesset equation. Because of the origins, the results can be categorized into two groups. Latter two cavitation models show distinct moments of generation and extinction of cavity structures, although former two models are relatively difficult to identify. However, the predicted hydro-acoustic SPLs are almost same, except Kunz’s model. Because Kunz’s model predicts small cavity structures and pressure distributions on hydrofoil surfaces.
