A study on the disourse as to the removal of Taekwondo from the list of the Olympic Games from the perspective of historical sociology원문보기

The purpose of this study was to analyze the discourse as to the removal of taekwondo from the list of the Olympic games, discuss the analysis results from the perspective of historical sociology and identify the reasons for the emergence of such removal and the present progress status in a bid to contribute to Taekwondo remaining as one of the Olympic games. To achieve these purposes, the study has collected and analyzed preliminary data and information through the RISS4U, a prestigious academic database, and used KINDS, a news article search system provided by the Korea Press Foundation and naver news article search system to conduct the analysis of discourse. It has been followed by the in-depth analysis of the articles collected in this manner using the Fairclough's CDA to come up with the following results. First, during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the emergence of such words as "4 billion", "embezzlement", "arrest warrant" and the "suspension of IOC qualifications" encouraged the sentiment of removing Taekwondo from the Olympics. In 2004 Athens Olympic Games in Greece, it was found that Taekwondo was mocked by such expressions as ‘All it does is to stare and jump’, ‘Occasionally, the feet reach above the head and nothing more", and ‘Passive’ led to the conclusion that ‘Taekwondo is no fun’. The study has also found that the aggressive actions of 'Altonia Matos' and' Sera Stephenson during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games eventually produced the expression of a possible removal of Taekwondo from the Olympics. During the 2012 London Olympics, however, such expressions as "8,000 tickets sold out" and "increasingly more interesting" caught our eyes, turning the tide from negative opinions about Taekwondo in previous Olympic Games back to positive, resulting in such review as "Taekwondo is newly reborn". Finally, in 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Taekwondo competition was once again subject to harsh criticism and cynicism with such expressions as 'Taekwondo is like nothing more than playing jegi' or "a game that puts rouge on the cheeks and the forehead and began to be called a knee-wrestling match, and all of these mocking sarcastic expressions accelerated the already negative opinions into the dropping of Taekwondo from the list of the Olympic games. The process analysis has split the discourse as to the removal of Taekwondo into the first phase (2000-2012) and the second phase (2012-2016). The first phase deals with the initial formation of negative public opinions of Taekwondo, which involves a number of scandals and depressing events, including ‘irregularities involving Kim Un-yong', 'judgment dispute’, 'assault on judge', 'lack of entertainment' and ‘amateurish competition arrangement’, giving rise to internal ideas such as 'excessive verbal expression', triumphalism', and 'imperialism'. The study has found that the second phase that involved a number of new attempts such as new competition rules of Taekwondo and electronic protective gears introduced in the London Olympics had positive effects and turned things around from discussion of the removal of Taekwondo to suspension of such extreme decision-making. However, the introduction of the electronic protective gears, which was originally intended to encourage the fairness of the judge, deteriorated with foul techniques for the sake of winning over time, resulting in harsh public criticism such as ‘foot fencing instead of Taekwondo’. ‘comparable to chick fight, and ‘no fun’ during the Rio Olympic Games period. It aggravated and sped up the discourse of removing Taekwondo from the Olympics, which was a chronic opinion immediately upon completion of the Olympic Games. Next, the social practice analysis has found that the discourse on the removal of Taekwondo from the Olympics during the formation process above has been formed under the influence of a number of historical and sociological contexts in Northeast Asia. At first, in terms of the presence of a contextual situation, spectators sought more intense and exciting competitions true to the essence of martial arts. It has also been found that from the political point of view, Taekwondo was undergoing serious factional and academic clique conflicts, which was reflected in the negative sentiment toward the removal of Taekwondo. Judging from the hegemonic context, it all started from a hegemonic fight among three major countries in Northeast Asia (Korea, China and Japan) that have long repeatedly invasions and warfare and still go through fierce completions in various fields. China and Japan that have long sought to have their own traditional competitions of ‘wu shu’ and ‘karate’ listed in the Olympic games have naturally been jealous of and held the success of Taekwondo in check, as evidenced by of their various efforts to achieve their hegemonic goals, including lobbying activities intended to remove Taekwondo from the Olympic games.
