The purpose of this study is to develop and apply contents composed of cognitive and perception elements by using simulator software to evaluate cognitive and perceptual functions in regard to elderly drivers. In order to develop a driver cognitive-perceptual evaluation program, evaluation factors were taken from previous articles related to the driving characteristics of elderly drivers. In addition, an evaluation scenario was set up by analyzing the prior articles in regard to the primary conditions leading to accidents involving elderly drivers. The developed Cognitive Perceptual Evaluation Program was based on the STISIM system developed by System Technology Inc.(SIT) and consisted of 13 sub-test items of 4 evaluation areas. The hardware reconstructed a simulator of the Daegu University rehabilitation center. The hardware input device provided comfort when operating with the real driver's seat. The steering wheel, accelerator pedal, and deceleration pedal were incorporated into the Logitech G27 Pro Gear in order to provide an immersive experience. The output device was equipped with three 27-inch monitors for a minimum 135 ° field-of-view. For the application and analysis of DESim, traditional cognitive-perceptual evaluations, simulator-based driving cognitive-perceptual evaluations, and simulated road driving evaluations were performed for drivers in their 20's and for elderly drivers. In the traditional cognitive-perceptual evaluation results, there were no problems in cognitive-perception function for the younger drivers. There were, however, problems for the elderly drivers, with the exception of MMSE-K. The DESim results showed significant differences between the driving characteristics of the younger drivers and those of elderly drivers. The characteristics of the elderly drivers are as follows. 1) In the divided attention ability tests, the accuracy of the number of normal reactions to stimulations from the peripheral field-of-view was reduced to less than 80%. In addition, the reaction time was delayed from a safe response time by 2.5s. 2) In the performance reaction tests regard to certain conditions, there was a delay in performance judgment and processing speed after recognizing that a car on the shoulder had suddenly interrupted. 3) In the visual-motor coordination ability tests, the drivers tended to drive to the right of the lane, and there were lane departures in all sub-test. In particular, at high-speed straight sections and high-speed sharp curve sections, they were not able to accelerate to maintain the lane, and steering wheel and pedal have many operations. 4) In the depth perception ability tests, there was no significant difference. In the simulator road test results, the total score of the elderly driver was lower than that of the younger drivers. In addition, as deduction factors, the younger drivers were 53.85% in no signal violation and the elderly drivers were 20% in signal violation. Finally, the correlations between cognitive-perception characteristics and road driving characteristics of both group of drivers were analyzed. As per the results, traditional cognitive-perception evaluation methods showed correlations in one of the four test areas while DESim tests showed correlations in two of the four test areas. It is expected that DESim will be able to be used as an aptitude evaluation tool to confirm the driving characteristics of older drivers so as to reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents and to ensure safe driving of elderly drivers in the future. It will be a basis for doing so. Therefore, organizations that apply DESim, which is a simulator-based operation perception evaluation program, should be prepared. This is because it is the safest evaluation method that can predict the driving ability of elderly drivers and confirm the risk for various driving conditions. Furthermore, in license renewal systems for elderly drivers, educational institutions should be established for safe driving education as well as for the establishment of an evaluation system for driving aptitude.
