Various issues related to sustainable development have been examined extensively in the construction industry, and various green certification systems have been discussed as a part of efforts to realize sustainable development. Green certification systems include LEED in the United States, BREEAM in the UK, G-SEED in Korea, and Health-friendly Housing Construction Standard. In Korea, it is mandatory to acquire certifications for buildings above a certain scale. As a result, the demand for ecofriendly certifications has increased, and various studies have been conducted on efficient performance of ecofriendly certification tasks. These tasks are classified into area estimation, material information management, and documentation. In the material information management task, unnecessary duplication of work and missing information occur because data are distributed to the personal computers of workers or exist in nonstandard forms. Therefore, to improve the tasks for material information management, the following problems should be addressed: 1) Rational evaluation of material selection is difficult because of limitations on the amount and quality of collected information; 2) Unnecessary duplication of work occurs because the important information created at each stage of a project is not delivered efficiently to the next step; 3) Information management that reflects the characteristics of material information, which requires continuous updating, is not sufficient. Therefore, the present study proposes a process of collecting and classifying product information using "web crawling" and "ontology," which are the element technologies for system development, to improve material information management. G-SEED and Health-friendly Housing Construction Standard, which require material information as a certification requirement in domestic and overseas green certification systems, are selected as the research scope of this study. Furthermore, the proposed information management process is verified for interior finishing materials, which are the most closely related to green certification tasks among building materials. This study has the following significance: First, the required information is derived by analyzing the existing literature related to the construction of building material databases and the items related to building materials among green certification systems. Second, the problems related to material information are derived at each step of the information management process, and an improved process that applies web crawl and ontology as element technologies is proposed. The results of this study are expected to provide a source technology for efficient performance of green certification tasks, to reduce the time required for the information management of building materials, and to contribute to the elimination of human errors.
