The dielectric properties and discharge characteristics of various dielectrics are studied and applied to dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) devices. Dielectric barrier discharges are less likely to receive direct electrical shock due to the dielectric, and are capable of stable and uniform plasma discharge. In addition, discharge is performed through the atmosphere around the object, so that it is not necessary to inject the discharge gas, which makes it possible to miniaturize the device. Since the dielectric is present on the surface of the electrode, the discharge characteristics of the plasma are influenced by the characteristics of the dielectric. Therefore, it is important to confirm the characteristics of the dielectric. In this study, dielectric characteristics and discharge characteristics of various dielectric materials are investigated. The dielectric constant, capacitance, and dielectric loss factor (D-factor) are investigated by dielectric properties. Current-voltage characteristics, firing voltage, and breakdown voltage are investigated by the discharge characteristics. The dielectric uses non-flexible dielectrics and a film-type polymer dielectric. Non-flexible dielectrics are glass, quartz, and alumina. The flexible film dielectric uses a polyimide film, a polypropylene film, or a glass-composite polymer film. We will also discuss ways to reinforce the film-type polymer dielectric to ensure durability and stability as a solid dielectric. In addition, DBD devices suitable for various dielectric characteristics are developed. We develop a stick-type DBD device by applying a solid dielectric with fixed shape and develop a plasma pad by applying a film-type polymer dielectric with flexible properties. In a stick type DBD device, a discharge occurs between the quartz and the skin. The skin is a ground, and plasma is generated between the dielectric and the skin. Plasma pads are formed on both sides of polyimide film, which are used as dielectrics, with high voltage electrode and ground electrode in different form, and plasma is generated in the overlapping part of ground electrode and high voltage electrode. Plasma occurs along the pattern on the surface where the ground electrode. Stick type DBD device is made by own design together with dedicated power source device, and it is largely divided into a power unit part and a plasma generation part. The power unit includes SMPS, air-pump, dimming timer, DC-converter, and inverter primary module. Plasma generation part includes inverter secondary module with transformer and metal electrode, dielectrics. The stick type DBD device blows air around the dielectric. As air is injected, the plasma uniformity increases. Also, it can be expected to reduce thermal damage caused by plasma. Both of the power supply unit and the plasma generation part have solved the noise problem such as electromagnetic wave radiated to the outside by applying the metal case. The plasma pad has a high voltage electrode and a ground electrode on both sides of the polyimide film. Above the high-voltage electrode it is fully insulated by coating a silicone-rubber to secure the user's electrical safety. A medical gauze was attached to the ground electrode surface to solve the problem that the discharge space was not secured due to contact with the skin when the plasma pad was attached, and at the same time, a medicine for skin treatment was applied. Plasma pads do not use a thick dielectric such as quartz and glass, which has the advantage of lowering the discharge voltage to less than 1 kV. Therefore, the size of the power supply unit can be reduced drastically as compared with the conventional size, so that the power supply unit can be downsized and the wearable system can be applied.
