Under climate of Korea, maintaining consistent year-round production of cut roses in the greenhouses is difficult due to both high temperature in summer and low radiation in winter. Therefore, it is important to determine the optimal growing condition by analyzing the effect of seasonal environment changes in the greenhouses on the growth of cut roses. To predict such changes that occur in the growth of cut roses under different seasonal environments, plant growth models can be a useful tool. In this study, a model for rose shoot growth developed by the previous study was validated and modified with the purpose of discerning the applicability of said model under cultivation environment in Korea, and predicting the changes in the growth of cut roses under high temperature.
1. Validation of the shoot growth model of cut roses in domestic greenhouse conditions The validation experiment was conducted in two cut rose farms located in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, and four cultivars of cut roses, Rosa ‘Antique Curl’, R. ‘Beast’, R. ‘Ahoi’, and R. ‘Fuego’ was used as plant materials. The result of the experiment showed that the model had a high coefficient of determination for the growth of shoots, and performed well for predicting the growth in all four cultivars (R2 = 0.84, 0.87, 0.79, and 0.90). However, at the harvest stage, the model over- and under-performed for the cultivars ‘Antique Curl’ and ‘Fuego’, respectively. In order to resolve this problem, the maximum leaf area coefficient of the leaf area equation was modified to take account of the leaf area of cultivars ’Antique Curl’ and ’Fuego’. Re-experimentation showed that the modification improved the performance of the model for both cultivars while maintaining the high coefficient of determination.
2. Application of the shoot growth model of cut roses grown in high temperature condition To discern the applicability of shoot growth model of cut roses under high temperature, two cultivars of cut roses, ‘Antique Curl’ and ‘Beast’, were grown in growth chambers set to night/day temperatures of 24/20℃ for the control group and 32/28℃ for the treatment group. For both cultivars, the shoot growth model performed well for predicting the decrease in growth of the rose shoots under high temperature, showing high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.80 and 0.62). Although, the model over-performed both control and treatment in ‘Antique Curl’, the model which used the modified leaf area can improve the accuracy of the model at harvest stage.
From these results, it could be concluded that the growth model developed by the previous study is applicable for greenhouse production of cut roses in Korea. In addition, the model was confirmed to perform well for predicting the decrease of productiveness and quality in cut roses under high temperature in summer. Therefore, this shoot growth model would be able to be used to aid the growers to maintain the optimal growing environment within the greenhouses, and to provide base data for greenhouse environment control and monitoring systems.
