Recently, led by agencies such as the Korea Forestry Agency and city hall and provincial government, there has been an increasing demand for the science technology development for maintenance and management of forests through spatial information, remote exploration, and aerial surveys. This technology will enable prompt responses to disaster situations. The existing stock map has been carried out by remote exploration and aerial photographs methods. The recent research for classification of domestic tree species has been focused on the comparison between the verification of hyperspectral aerial image utilization and classification techniques. On the other hand, mainly in overseas countries, Sentinel-2 images are actively used for remote exploration studies such as land coverage and tree species classification. It’s because using two platforms enabled shortened photography period, 13 different bands, and high spatial resolution of up to 10m. However, there is a lack of time series analysis on the same area, and there is a limitation to apply this method to our domestic situations because Korea has four distinct seasons. In addition, there have been no reports on the use of Sentinel-2 in Korea. In order to overcome the limitation of time, cost and long survey period of the conventional tree species classification system, which is essential for aerial photographing, this research was carried out classification of tree species by using Sentinel-2 seasonal images of spring, summer, fall, winter, utilizing methods, MLH(Maximum Likelihood), SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper) and SVM (Support Vector Machine). The analysis showed that the degree of accuracy of each classification technique and the optimal time to obtain images of each species. Based on this, the following conclusions were obtained. Firstly, the maximum accuracy for Sentinel-2A images and aerial photographs were 73.3% and 71.7%, respectively, However, it is shown that there is a difference of accuracy of up to 30% according to each classification technique. Therefore, it is important not only to consider the spatial resolution and the information amount of the basic data according to the acquisition subject, but also to select the appropriate classification technique. Secondly, the MLH technique is the most effective for species classification of each seasonal Sentinel-2A image for pine tree, nut pine tree, larch, and pitch pine, which are typical conifer species of Korean peninsula. It is judged that the maximum accuracy will be obtained by using winter images Lastly, it was found that there were discrepancies between the accuracy of species classification according to the seasonal changes of each species and the user accuracy results. Nut pine trees were the most effective in spring images in April, and larch were most effective in winter images in January. Pitch pine trees and pine trees showed effective classification results in January and October. In this paper, we propose a method that uses Sentinel-2 image is advantageous for species classification system in domestic environment where seasonal changes are diverse and 70% of the land is mountainous. Compared with the aerial photographing method, Sentinel-2 images can be acquired at various times, and various spectral information can be acquired. Therefore, it is thought that classification of species by different time of acquisition of data for each kind of species can provide more effective classification results than conventional methods by aerial photographs. However, in this study, the target species were limited to pine, nut pine, larch, and pitch pine tree, representative softwood species of the Korean peninsula. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously study to determine the classification method of suitable data acquisition time according to the seasonal changes in the broad - leaved trees and various species.
