Unlike grave goods, brass artifacts are completely exposed to air, their surfaces reacting to corrosive substances in the air and form corrosive oxide. In this study, chemical cleaning techniques for removing metallic corrosive compounds built up on cultural heritages made of copper alloy were explored, and based on the findings, examine the effect of chemicals used in removing corrosive oxide from brass artifacts and efficient cleaning methods. To conduct experiments, two types of specimens were prepared where one is standard artifact specimen and the other is artificially made to resemble the composition of the actual artifacts. When analyzed the standard specimen, CuO(Tenorite), ZnO and other oxides found in copper and zinc were identified, and when analyzed the artificial specimen, made from referring to literature, Cu2O(Cuprite) and CuO(Tenorite) were identified, corrosive compounds found in copper. When visually observed and measured weight reduction, on average, the specimens became lighter by about 0.02 to 0.03g, indicating corrosion. Forced corrosion specimen was chemically cleaned using phosphoric acid, citric acid, formic acid, oxalic acid, and EDTA solutions. It was confirmed that the corrosive oxide on the surface was removed. After the artificial corrosive oxide was removed, the surface was observed using a microscope to determine the extent of removal, and a colorimeter was used to observe the color change over time after the solution was applied. Specimen was continuously measured to determine the quantity of artificial corrosive oxide removal. The thickness of the coating film was measured before and after the oxide removal and the rate of reduction was determined in percentage and recorded. XRD analysis was performed on the remaining oxide layer to study the change in the oxide layer due to the chemicals used. It was confirmed that corrosive layer was more effectively removed when used phosphoric acid, citric acid, formic acid and oxalic acid than EDTA solutions; and phosphoric acid was the most effective of all. The result of XRD analysis disclosed that no new corrosive compound was built up and corrosive layer was removed from certain specimens. Based on the experiments above, the effectiveness of the chemicals on removing corrosive oxide from brass artifacts was explored and more effective rust removing methods will be developed. However, to develop a more effective techniques to process brass artifacts, there must be continuous studies on preservation processing.
