This study is a methodological research that aimed to verify content validity, construct validity, reliability, and criterion-related validity of the Child Abuse Potential Inventory, originally developed by Milner and then translated to Korean by Ahn. Data used in this study were collected from day care centers, kindergartens, and cultural centers located in D metropolitan city from June 29 to September 25, 2017 after obtaining cooperation of directors and class teachers at the facilities. The subjects were 209 mothers of infants, toddlers, and children of preschool age and they gave written consent before participating in this study. The research tools consisted of mothers’ general characteristics, Child Abuse Potential Inventory (Milner, 1986), and mothers’ attitude towards parenting (Hong, 2001). The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24. The general characteristics of the subjects were examined using descriptive statistics, while child abuse potential according to general characteristics was analyzed using t-test and ANOVA. First, a 5-point Likert scale was used in the Child Abuse Potential Inventory. Face validity test was performed twice. A professor of pediatric nursing and six professors of nursing were asked to conduct content validity test and they derived the content validity index (CVI) of each item on a 4-point scale. Meanwhile, for verifying construct validity, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test and Bartlett’s sphericity test were conducted, followed by principal component analysis and exploratory factor analysis. Reliability was examined using Cronbach’s alpha and Guttman split-half coefficient. Finally, to test criterion-related validity, the relationships among Child Abuse Potential Inventory Korean (CAP-K), mothers’ parenting attitude, and the original tool of Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI) were investigated using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. As a result, this study found the following results. 1) The CVI of the total items was .91, thus content validity was considered satisfactory. 2) Factor analysis was conducted on 77 items and they were reduced to 44 items, which were categorized into four factors. 3) As for internal consistency reliability, Cronbach’s alpha of .959 was satisfactory and Guttman split-half reliability coefficient was .882. Meanwhile, test-retest reliability turned out to be r=.859, p<.001, indicating a significant correlation. 4) In terms of criterion-related validity, there was a significant inverse correlation between the Korean version of Child Abuse Potential Inventory and mothers’ parenting attitude, which confirms that the tool can predict mothers’ attitude toward children. Additionally, CAPI2, the Korean version of Milner’s Child Abuse Potential Inventory translated by Ahn, which rates each item on a dichotomous scale, and CAPI5, the same version that uses a 5-point scale, were analyzed by comparing with the original tool. It was found that the relationship with the latter was more significant than that with the former. In conclusion, the results of this study established reliability and validity of the Korean version of Child Abuse Potential Inventory and found it to be an appropriate tool to evaluate mothers’ potential to abuse their children.
