This thesis is a case study of qualitative research on learning experiences of members for Chaekmaru (CMR, hereafter), an adult reading community of practice, from the inside point of view. The study aims for analyzing the detailed contents of learning experiences of those who participated in this community programs. CMR was established in 2003 by several voluntary instructors/leaders for reading. From June, 2017 through January, 2018, 9 members of this community were interviewed in person and observed closely in their community activities, and their workshop materials, meeting records, contents on the Internet website of the community were collected and thoroughly reviewed for the study. Learning experiences of CMR members have been accumulated for 16 years through practicing inside as well as outside activities and they can be classified for four areas as follows; Firstly, it is the area for starting legitimate peripheral participation. CMR members joined the community for continuous reading activities and started legitimate peripheral participation in order to enjoy unique pleasure from reading, to exchange their opinions, and to free themselves from their narrow points of view. Secondly, it is the area for inspiring them with positive identification as members of the same community. Participating in the group reading activities and getting reification of theories and knowledges gave them positive ways of thinking. Inside and outside practicing activities of the community along with continuous reification provided them with chances to share a sense of belonging. Thirdly, it is the area for encouraging the better sense of belonging to the community. CMR members participated in group reading programs, acquired the meaningful practical knowledge, controled their time/environment in order to implement the spiral process of positive linkage, and eventually gained the fair level of sense of belonging. Lastly, it is the area for reappropriation of knowledge/teaching methods and their embodiment. CMR members succeeded in the reappropriation of the knowledge/teaching methods acquired from the community activities and finally they revealed the positive attitudes towards the community as lifelong learners. Among learning experiences, three sustaining axes were found in strongly holding on the community. They are the axis of mutual engagement, the axis of positive identification, and the axis of advancing sense of belonging. Through positive of the three axes, CMR has continued its history for 16 years. The results of the study show that the reason why the reading community of practice sustains its vital power among today's society is not only because its members can acquire intellectual pleasures in reading but also the members accept differences in their thoughts by having hot discussions, and recognize reciprocal benefits on all the members. It should be mentioned that there are three good reasons why they were able to keep their community activities for 16 years. Firstly, they have kept records of their inside as well outside activities. Secondly, the community shared their ideas for new programs without any qualification. Lastly, they continuously practiced social contribution as an introspective community. Senior members of CMR pointed out that their Telros, “doing together is better than being prompt, and getting more self-development through reading can be enhanced by participation,” are the essence of reciprocally beneficial involvement in their reading community of practice.
