On the strength of the Korean government's recent policy support, start-up demand is growing. Most of the start-up entrepreneurs are establishing a company and doing business on a small scale in a self-employed way. Indeed, as for Korea, around 40% of all the start-up entrepreneurs are running their business as family business that allows their spouse or family member to participate in management. In this way, small businesses are petty in scale and due to lack of resources (e.g. capital, workforce), the owner's spouse or family member of many of them participates in establishment and management from an early stage, which are their characteristics. But most of them have a high rate of start-up failure, which is highly problematic at the level of society and nation as well as individual. As for companies at an earlier stage, those with copreneurship who have participated in establishment end up bearing not inconsiderable mental and physical strains due to 'an income lower than before'; 'a requirement for spending more time'; 'more effort made'. In addition, they have difficulty in having a balance between work and home, which causes a very high possibility of occurrence of conflicts. Incidentally, the reality is that to date there have been few studies of start-ups where the married couples or family members participate in management. Hence, this study dealt with copreneurship of small start-ups where a married couple has established a small company and is running it, aiming to look at what effects the work-family conflicts that the couple feels while establishing and managing have on the physiological strains (mental and physical burdens). The study also intends to look at what effects the spousal commitment and firm age have on the founders' work-family conflicts and physiological strains while establishing and managing it. For the study, those with copreneurship who have established a small company with their spouse and is participating in management activities together with their spouse were surveyed. Copies of the questionnaire were distributed to a total of 150 married couples with copreneurship, and a total of 252 copies (2 copies from each couple) were collected. The responses of 121 couples with copreneurship - the unreliable responses of 5 couples excluded - were used for the final analysis, and a moderated regression analysis where the control variables (gender; with or without children) were input was performed. This is a summary of the research findings. First, the existence of a child of those with copreneurship did not have significant effects on their physiological strains; but their gender had significant effects on their physiological strains. Second, the work-family conflicts they feel also had significant effects on an increase in their physiological strains. Third, the spousal commitment to start-ups did not increase their physiological strains directly, but interacted with their work-family conflicts, having significant effects on their physiological strains. Here, the direction of the sign was shown (+), meaning that the higher spousal commitment means an increase in the owners' physiological strains. Last, when a start-up's firm age was converted into a dummy variable and that variable was input, it did not have moderating effects between the work-family conflicts and physiological strains of those with copreneurship. But an additional analysis where the sample was segmented based on firm age produced another result. Specifically, the analysis was performed after classifying the sample by 3 years after establishment. As a result, as for new start-ups with a firm age of less than 3 years, the spousal commitment increased the effects of the owners' work-family conflicts on the physiological strains. On the contrary, as for new start-ups with a firm age of 3 years or more, the spousal commitment showed no effects, because the effects of the owners' work-family conflicts on the physiological strains were not moderated. This is highly significant in that it is the first study of the relationship between the real problems - 'work-family conflicts'; 'spousal role'; and 'physiological strains' - those with copreneurship have. Also, while the existing management-related studies have taken note only of mental factors (e.g. job satisfaction, organizational commitment) as result variables, the study adopted the concept 'physiological strains' (which includes physical symptoms as well as mental factors) for measurement. This is a very important finding, considering it based on the existing research finding where an entrepreneur's circumstances influence the business performance in connection with the corporate management, because that entrepreneur's physiological strains arising from a complex start-up management environment hinder his/her rational judgment, causing wrong decision-making, and generating a possibility of ending in negative business performance. In this way, the study has more realistic and substantial meanings compared to the existing management studies in that it drived from the conventional management research, and dealt mainly with variables close to entrepreneurs' realities - significant academically and practically also.
