Some of foreign Korean learners have studied the meaning of Korean vocabulary, but often make unnatural expressions or make errors due to inaccurate usage of vocabulary. For this reason, they have understood the meaning of individual words but have failed to accurately study the usage and conjugation of such words. In actual communication situations, learners should not only know the meaning of vocabulary but also properly understand and use the situation in which the vocabulary is used in order to make proper communications. Against such backdrop, this study was conducted with the recognition of the importance of collocation education for foreign Korean learners. The collocation for Korean language education was defined as the relationship of two lexemes being co-currently combined, and this study focused on ‘uninflected word+predicate-type’ collocations among lexical collocations that account for a large portion of Korean collocations.
A massive Korean 'substantive+predicative'-type list was made based on 『Sejong Collocation Dictionary』,『Korean Collocation Dictionary for Learners』 and 『Standard Korean Language Dictionary』. In addition, the validity and practicality of such listed collocations were reviewed, and their educational utility was examined, so a list of ‘uninflected word+predicate-type’ collocations for Korean education was presented.
Next, ‘uninflected word+predicate-type’ collocations for Korean education were classified according to items of meaning for learners to more easily understand the meaning of vocabulary based on the meaning. To that end, under the principle of materialization and integration, seven items of meaning - body, emotion, life and interpersonal relationships, food and shelter, social life, education and leisure activities, and nature - were set up. In addition, to boost the efficiency of learning vocabulary, the collocations were classified according to learners' learning grades. Collocations were classified not only according to their components' difficulty levels, their practicality, and their easiness of learning, but also according to the transparency and abstractness of collocation types and their frequency of use based on corpus.
This study developed and presented an objective and systematic list of collocations for Korean education for teachers to use the list as a reference for writing Korean teaching materials or for conducting Korean classes. The list will also serve as a meaningful vocabulary material for learners to expand their vocabulary qualitatively.
