Appropriation is the production method of the existing art work as one of the important creative methods since post-modernism to the contemporary Art. Artists became free from the modernism art's coercion of making something new constantly and came to enjoy creation and work themselves purely. Now, the artistic questions are not about "what kind of new things can we create?" , but about "what can we do with what we already have?", and appropriation changed the complete value of artistic works into progressive forms. Since the Cultural Revolution, appropriation emerged as a major creation method of Chinese contemporary Art. In the 1980s, along with reform and opening policy, western cultures began to flow into China widely, in the process of Chinese artists accepting the flow, it seemed inevitable that people or cultural identity would clash. Like other peoples, China had their own original culture deeply rooted in themselves. Under the situation, succession without unilateral exclusion or criticism lost the ground and a growing number of young artists had to learn about western arts and to search for new ways. At this point, Chinese artists of that time, attempted to combine their society, economic changes, or consumption and other factors of capitalism with their mental heritage factors. Therefore, this study examined the appropriation form of traditional culture seen in chinese contemporary Art based on concrete questions such as how appropriation, which is mentioned as a major creative method of post-modernism, is reflected and realized in the contemporary Art, and how it works to the identity of chinese contemporary Art. In addition, the purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of esthetics of China and west produced in the contemporary Art, tradition and the modern day, and new relations between creation and appropriation. Discussions about appropriation of chinese traditional cultures seen in the contemporary Art are conducted in the substitution of previous cases. Accordingly, the scope of previous cases was set to the works of the researcher, but two sample artists were selected. From modernism to post-modernism era, how appropriation method was changed and formed was examined, and newly emerging appropriation trends along with the Chinese contemporary Art creation and the trend. It was found that appropriation became the methodology for China to absorb the contemporary Art of the west, and it is the contemporary form of China's art. Ultimately, appropriation of traditional culture is the result which expresses the faith of Chinese artists about China's identity into the contemporary Art form. It is not a temporary phenomenon occurring in the contemporary Art, but another question is being raised as a still important art form, and new discussions are being searched. In particular, discussions about appropriation of China's traditional culture serve as the foundation for understanding the identity of Chinese contemporary Art, and play the role of medium which can raise constant questions about Chinese art. Discussions about appropriating traditional cultures in the contemporary Art forms, or appropriation of China's traditional culture written in the esthetics of the west will open new directions and possibilities for chinese contemporary Art to be developed.
