This study involves the construction of a creative drama program for empathic understanding and explores young children's responses to the program. The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of a creative drama program for empathic understanding as a teaching-learning method for young children and ultimately provide basic data for developing creative drama programs appropriate for young children. The research questions formulated to achieve the purpose of this study were as follows: Question 1. How is a young children’s creative drama program for empathic understanding constructed? Question 2. How do young children respond to the creative drama program for emphatic understanding? This study was conducted from April to October, 2017. After developing a creative drama program, the program was implemented with young children once a week for a total of 7 sessions over 7 weeks from September 1 to October 20. As for the procedure of program construction, the goal and objectives of the program were planned based on review of previous studies and literature, then the content of the program was selected through the process of exploring children’s literature and video clips on Educational Broadcasting System, performing internet search and conducting expert verification by experts in creative drama and early childhood education. Subsequently, a teaching-learning plan was designed. Also, a total of 7 programs were organized by planning drama conventions, symbolic props, and the roles of young children and teachers as part of teaching-learning strategies. The participants in this study were eight 5-year-old children involved in family cooperative activities at the Cooperative Childcare Center within N Healthy Family Support Center in N district of S city. The researcher participated in the program to implement the program. During the program, on-site observation was performed focusing on the children’s responses and their interactions with peers and teachers. Each session of creative drama class was recorded in video and photographed. The transcripts of the videos, the researcher’s daily reflective journal and on-site observation record and the outcome of children’s activity were used as analysis data. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, a creative drama program was constructed as a concrete educational plan for young children’s empathic understanding. Recognizing the participating children as dynamic organic bodies of the program and setting the structuration of open-ended drama as its constructive background, the program was aimed at enabling young children to empathize with people and nature and express their thoughts and communicate them through creative drama. The specific objectives selected to realize this goal were as follows: Children know that human beings and nature coexist; children understand other people’s thoughts, emotions, situations and so on from the perspective of others; children know the value of promise within a social context and observe social rules; children solve problematic situations by helping and cooperating with one another as a member of a community; children develop the ability to communicate with peers from controlling their own emotions; and children cultivate the heart to value oneself. The contents of the program were composed mainly around events that take place in a forest and a wild animal hospital. The teaching-learning methods of the program consisted of teaching-learning principles, teaching-learning process, and drama conventions and symbolic props as teaching-learning strategies. The teaching-learning principles incorporated in the program were the principle of play-centered content, principle of spontaneity and improvisation, principle of experience-centered content, principle of active interaction, and principle of empathic understanding. The teaching-learning process consisted of introduction, role assignment and space organization, performing a play and finishing step. Dramatic conventions were applied as teaching-learning strategies, including mime, whole group role play, ‘Mantle of the Expert’, teacher-in-role, message delivery, and making sign and map. A symbolic props provided for the program included props for organizing the space in the wild animal hospital, props needed for children’s roles as experts, and props for the teacher as a character in the creative drama. Evaluation of the program was conducted on three levels: the children, the teacher and the program. In the program, the children played the characters who are able to give and receive help as their lives and take responsibility of their own lives, and the teacher played a character who is in need of empathic understanding. Second, the children responded to the creative drama program for empathic understanding in ways indicative of increased emotional exchanges between peers, building community, and recreation of theatrical space. The children collaborated and cooperated while solving the theatrical task given to them, and actively supported the peer who was in fear and alone within the given role. They also learned about ways to form a community and live together as member of the community, and demonstrated behaviors of recreating the theatrical spaces of forest and wild animal hospital. This study confirmed the educational usability of creative drama program for young children by constructing and implementing a creative drama program for empathic understanding and examining how young children’s respond to the program. The findings of this study serve as basic data for the development of creative drama program for empathic understanding and present theoretical basis and implications for creative drama program which can be used in the field of early childhood education.
